Just finished watching that game(I love one hour football) and the UCLA play calling may rival punting from the 30.
UCLA's on the road, is much bigger up front and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. The runs between tackle were actually averaging more ypc. Yet they pass the ball 56 times and run it 35 times. 2 INT's by Rosen, one a pick 6, the other inside the redzone late in the game with a chance to take the lead.
The other puzzling thing I noticed, every play action pass he faked the handoff with his back to the LOS. Yet every time they ran the ball he never turned his back and handed it off facing the LOS. You would think a smart player/coach is going to notice that and use that as a blitz trigger. Memphis did successfully blitz in the second half and force some mistakes by Rosen.
Had UCLA come out and committed to the run early in the game the Memphis D would have been worn down in the second half, UCLA would not have had two picks and the Memphis offense would have stayed off the field. Instead they took the bigger, more powerful team on the road and tried to out finesse a very good finesse team. We aren't the only ones doing less with Mora.

UCLA's defense didn't look good. They certainly gave up several big plays, but they also made enough stops for UCLA to win. The offensive game plan did nothing to help the D out. The best defense is keeping the other teams offense off the field. That's not always possible depending on the matchup, but in this case UCLA had the horsepower advantage to impose the run, control the clock, wear the Memphis D down, and keep the Memphis offense off the field, but they went pass happy instead, turned it over twice, and took some big sacks.

Rosen's pick 6 is the poster child of why I hate the roll out passing game. Doing so limits the QB to half (at most) the field. Throwing back across puts the ball in the air for a long time and across several defender's lanes and they can catch it in stride. Hell, the guy was a LB and no one had a shot at catching him.

"the other inside the redzone late in the game with a chance to take the lead." Did you notice how the defender (safety I think or maybe a linebacker) had timed the play so well that he was running at full speed at the line of scrimmage when the ball was hiked? If Rosen had just hesitated a split second the guy would have been off-sides or had to come to a screeching halt. That guy caused that interception to happen, IMHO. It sure is great being an armchair QB!

UCLA's defense didn't look good. It is too bad that Oregon State plays USC this year..............
