top 5 all time beav coach power rankings as of 9_14_2017. In reverse order according to coaching futility. (sorry Paul Downing, despite his winless campaign in 1895 is not eligible because he was also player/coach. That's cheating) 1 Joe Avezanno 2 (t) Craig Fertig 2 (t) CGA 4 Jerry Pettibone 5 Dave Kragthorpe CGA is gaining on Fertig and Avezanno, seemingly every week. That's heady company. CGA's overall record to this point is actually better than Pettibone but the blowouts to middling teams so far this year has vaulted into a tie for second. I hate doing this but it makes me feel better. Where do you get this from, Baseba11's Mom? Here are the official NCAA winning percentages for all coaches 1899-present: 1. Joe Avezzano 6-47-2 (.127) 2. Jerry Pettibone 13-52-1 (.205) 3. Craig Fertig 10-34-1 (.233) 4. CGA 7-20 (.259) 5. Dave Kragthorpe 17-48-2 (.269) 6. Kip Taylor 20-36 (.357) 7. Thomas McFadden 2-4-1 (.375) 8. H.W. Hargiss 6-8-1 (.433) 9. Dee Andros 51-64-1 (.444) 10. R.B. Rutherford 13-14-6 (.484)
As with most things, the media guide is wrong. It counts two Fertig wins, as losses. (UCLA forfeited a game to OSU in 1977, and Arizona State forfeited a game to Oregon State in 1979.)
In 1973, the division system was created. If games against FCS and Division 2 and 3 are removed:
1. Joe Avezzano 4-46-2 (.096) 2. CGA 4-20 (.167) 3. Jerry Pettibone 12-51-1 (.184) 4. Craig Fertig 10-34-1 (.233) 5. Dave Kragthorpe 14-46-2 (.242) 6. Kip Taylor 20-36 (.357) 7. Thomas McFadden 2-4-1 (.375) 8. H.W. Hargiss 6-8-1 (.433) 9. Dee Andros 51-63-1 (.448) 10. R.B. Rutherford 13-14-6 (.484)
Nine games left.
9-0 would tie allow CGA to climb to 7th all-time, between McFadden and Hargiss. 8-1 would allow CGA to climb to 6th all-time, between Taylor and McFadden. 4-5, 5-4, 6-3, or 7-2 would allow CGA to climb to 5th all-time, between Kragthorpe and Taylor. 3-6 would allow CGA to climb a spot to 3rd, between Pettibone and Fertig. 0-9, 1-8, or 2-7 would keep CGA in 2nd, between Avezzano and Pettibone.
CGA would have to lose the next 18 consecutive FBS games to pass Avezzano.
Maybe it was different back in the day, and they actually made teams "forefeit" games after the fact, and losses for one team tuned into wins. Nowadays, the NCAA tells teams to "vacate" their wins. So any losses we had to USC 2005 still count as losses for the Beavers, but USC cannot count them as wins. I suppose it could have been different in the Fertig era.

wilkyisdashiznit can you explain how ties factor into winning percentage? 4-38 would make him worse than Avezzano at 4-46-2? When you remove FCS wins: 4-20. UGH. Ties count as 1/2 win when calculating winning %.

Usually, forfeits are reserved for playing a player that a team (or administration) knows does is ineligible to play, i.e. flaunting the rules. None of USC's vacated wins were against Oregon State. Several teams had forfeits in the 1977-1979 era, because they knowingly were illegally qualifying players through a school that the schools knew they were not attending. 5 of the Pac-10 teams were on probation (including Oregon State) in the 1980 season for similar violations.

What's Riley's record vs. teams with winning records, for kicks and grins? Mike Riley went 42-65 (.393) against teams with .500+ records. Riley I went 3-10 (.231) and Riley II went 39-55 (.415). Against teams with losing records, Riley I went 5-4 (.556), and Riley II went 46-11 (.807), 51-15 (.773) total.
