The Beavs went to Seattle in 1985 with no hope. I didn't go because the weather was supposed to be gross and the game as well. It wasn't, and neither were the Beavs that fine day.
What would the message board of the day looked like before that game? A wee bit nastier than this one has been. And yet, we won.
Do I expect us to beat Wazzu Saturday? No. Do I hope we find our mojo and take it to the Cougs? You bet.
I'll take a win by the score of 21-20 any day.
GO BEAVS !!

The two losses are like 58-10 in the 2nd halves! 🤔

I like the sentiment, but the message board wouldn't have been nearly as bad because nobody expect that Beaver team to contend for a bowl. Most of the frustration comes from the fact that I think most people think we have the talent and ability to be competing, and yet we can't put it together. Like, at all.

Back in those days, the level of expectations was zero because our administration had exactly zero commitment to football. I think the message boards would have reflected that lack of commitment. What kind of crowds did we draw in non-UW and non-CW games those days? 20K on a good day? FWIW, I think we all still hope that SOMETHING can spark this team into something resembling a competent unit. A win would be icing on the cake. SaveSave

The Beavs were 34 pt dogs and had been ridiculed in the press all week. One of my favorite Beaver memories because it was so unexpected.

No. Do I hope we find our mojo and take it to the Cougs? You bet. I'll take a win by the score of 21-20 any day. GO BEAVS !! Several differences. Among them, Kragthrope was in year 1. Kragthorpe started with a 15-point win against Dennis Erickson's Idaho and followed that up with a last second victory against California. In so doing, Kragthorpe put together the first 2-0 start at Oregon State since Andros' 1967 Giant Killer year, when the Beavers started 3-0. Two wins also matched the number of wins that Avezzano was able to put together in his last 14 games, 2-11-1. Oregon State had not won more than one conference game and had not won a conference road game since 1978. The Beavers' only conference wins from 1979-1984 were all home wins against either California or Stanford. Oregon State had not defeated Washington since 1974 and had not won in Seattle since 1973. This is to say that Oregon State was more or less numb to that level of losing. And, simultaneously, there seemed to be plenty of room for optimism in the hiring of Kragthorpe. Also bringing up 1985 Washington seems like it would be more apt in three weeks, when Oregon State travels down to the Coliseum after losing by 97 combined points to Washington and Washington State. It should be noted that the last game before the trip to Seattle was a game against the Cougars that Washington State won 34-0.
