People, I have been a Beaver fan for a long time, played and coached in a lot of games (been on both sides losing bad and winning big) but have never seen anything like that! What I mean "like that" is a complete meltdown of; leadership, fundamentals and direction.
I have been a supporter (an objective supporter) of CGA and his staff because yes, they did deserve their time to try and develop what they thought was a successful program and that is not done overnight but...... I'm officially done supporting this staff and the leadership.
An objective observer realizes that when you take steps backwards as a program, that's on the coaches, PERIOD! I can honestly say that in all 3 phases, I don't think this staff has any idea what they are doing!
Special teams- you have a guy fair catching a punt on the effing 2 yard line? Are you kidding me?! I've never seen that before, because in HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL you're taught that you stand no deeper than the 10 yard line and if it goes over your head, let it go! Take the touchback at the 20 for god's sake! BTW, we turned the ball over in their redzone 2 plays later, that's one of the many reasons you don't do that! Or why the #2 RB A Pierce is returning kick offs when you have a guy burning a redshirt (C Taylor, who is apparently so good he has to play? When??)? Are you trying to get AP hurt? I don't understand. There is no other player on the roster that can return kicks, but the guy that is getting 20 plus carries a game?! The punter was suppose to be a weapon, yet nearly every punt bounced back on us and wasn't very deep overall!
Why you continue to throw the football when the rain comes pouring down and you have several running backs that are capable and available and your opponent is consistently having 5 in the box???
How an opponent can have someone on their defense sprinting/stemming toward the LOS (at least 6 times in the first half) and your QB can't see this (especially out of the "gun" which is suppose to be an advantage of this formation) and not get one offsides call because you can't delay the count for a quarter second or change the snap count!
Defensively, how we constantly lose contain (that's how that back-up QB ran untouched at the end of the game) or how a freshman safety gets 17 tackles and can take down a RB by himself but it takes several other "veteran players" 5 guys to stop (but they can't take down, the 200 lb RB). Or how the D Line could barely stay within 5 yards of the LOS off the snap of the ball against PSU but now (at least in the first half of the Minn game) they can defend blocks and actually hold their ground and even get off blocks to make plays but wait... that ended after the first half! But these are our best guys?!?!?!?
Game assessment: With the exception of a lucky (for the Beavs) slippery snap by Minnesota, that gave the Beavs a turnover that they got points off of! And a coincidental chop block on a wide open TD pass, this could have nearly been a shutout! Basically this game seemed to start off fast and once the Beavs encountered adversity, the air nearly completely came out of the team. Minn. made a couple mistakes and the Beavs capitalized on a couple of them but otherwise, didn't seem to create any opportunities on their own. Minnesota, honestly, is not a good football team! That makes this sting even more IMO. That might, might be 6-6 at the end of the season (Minnesota). 3rd down for a Beaver opp. is an absolute gimme. I get scared when it's 3rd and 20 plus (that's how bad it is). Your best player, Ryan Nall gets what, 5 carries? Fumbles and turnovers have been plaguing the Beavs!
Moving Forward: It's gonna be a long, brutal season! Worse than year one of the CGA era (see above, what that means)!
Positives: David Morris, Isiah Hodgins, Jordan Villamin
What's next? Long term? Who knows?! Hindsight always brings regret when things don't work out. I will be honest. Well before CGA was a name in the hat for the hiring of a new coach, one of (if not the first guy) to put his name in the hat for the new HC job was Jeff Tedford! I have always been a Tedford fan and I respect him because he is a great QB coach and great offensive mind but things didn't work out that way. I was excited to see that but nothing (obviously) transpired from that. It's pretty ridiculous when Fresno St (in year one of Tedford) competes better with #1 ALABAMA (@ Alabama), then we do in year 3, at home, against maybe a .500 Minnesota team (by season's end). That's horses%#t!
I think the next guy that comes in, has to be an experienced PAC 12 guy (even a long time coordinator or assistant to a PAC 12 school-know your enemies) and/or a quality NFL assistant.
Never QUIT!
Go Beavs!
