I think we've got a "too many cooks in the kitchen" scenario going on.
Nall only getting 15 carries a game is a problem for me. I understand you're trying to keep him healthy, but keeping him off the field doesn't make sense if it loses you games in the process. He's also the best receiver of the backs, and taking him out on third down seems like a step back.
Tyner hasn't shown yet that he's deserving of carries in my opinion and is living off his former glory, but he was damn good and probably deserves more than 3 carries a game to prove it.
I'm not 100% convinced that Artavis Pierce isn't the best running back on the team. He hits the hole with more power and aggression than anyone I can remember. He runs like DMX rapped. He definitely needs more carries. I'm very worried he is going to transfer after this season, particularly if Tyner is granted a sixth year.
Trevorris Rex Johnson looks competent too. I like his power in short yardage.
So what do you do? My gut tells me Nall ball all day long and the other guys only as needed. Tyner in the slot has potential, but only if he can catch the call, which he hasn't proven yet.
With Pierce looking like the best return guy we've got today, I fear we are wasting Calvin Tyler's redshirt as well.
Also, with an O-coordinator, a run game coordinator and a passing game coordinator, that could be another "too many cooks in the kitchen" scenario as well, but that's for another thread.

There are no indicators to believe that Tyner would have any success in the slot, that's not his body type or skill set. Honestly it doesn't matter who runs the ball if they can't get more than a yard before contact.

We switch from to a two-back set all game long. Reduce the number of throws we make. We don't have a strong QB anyway, so let's take the pressure off of him. Nall is being targeted by defenses, naturally, but Pierce is really shining. Right now, Tyner seems to be being used only as a distraction which doesn't seem to be working since he has only carried the ball a couple of times. Pierce and Nall all day long until the o-line figures out how to block. Repetition, repetition, repetition.
I saw at least one receiver looking lost on the field yesterday as the play developed toward him. Why aren't our receivers being coached to block!

Johnson looked really impressive to me yesterday, more so than any of the other backs.

Johnson looked really impressive to me yesterday, more so than any of the other backs. Pierce impressed me. The kickoff return and the tremendous breakout run that got called back for holding. He certainly has great speed. Nall looked like he was attracting all the attention of the defense. Which is why I want to see the two-back set.

[ We definitely should be getting more from our running attack. Yesterday, I found myself wanting Tyner and Pierce to get more touches. Without much push from our O-line, it seemed like Nall was running laterally way too often, making him much easier to deal with. Since Artie and Thomas explode more quickly (IMO), I felt like they got the most out of their touches. It even got to the point where Nall seemed to dance instead of getting up the field. On two successive series, he and Togai did that on second down catches, were tackled a yard or two short of the sticks, and then our hair-brained play selection resulted in the decision to punt. In both cases, they easily would have gotten first downs if they'd squared up and went straight ahead. With our tentative play right now, we need to keep moving the chains. With normal blocking, Ryan is a beast. He's powerful and decisive, and scary fast for a guy his size. Unfortunately, we get zero push up front on most plays (even against st smaller guys). All Nall needs is a seam to get moving and he is a terror. He's a different back when he takes the handoff flat-footed and there is penetration by the D. I'd like if we'd at least get our backs the ball quickly and with them moving.

big jimmy Wilson made the point on the radio yesterday that except for pierce all our backs are one cut runners. they need to be in the I formation and going full speed when they hit the "hole", make one move and go. nall and tyner both are being used either too much laterally or not at full speed when they get to the line of scrimmage. Wilson mentioned a scenario where garretson takes over at qb and we become a run first, 15 - 20 passes a game team. not sure that would work with our oline, but at least we would be playing to our strengths and maybe take some pressure off our defense. something has to change, starting to feel a 1 win season coming on.

With the QB under center 50% or more! We're wasting 4 good to great(we'll never really know if "great" at this rate) RBs. The other point some don't realize... good RB play increases the confidence and zeal of the OL. Just simplify the blocking scheme (not that it's too complicated now) get a hat a hat and let talented backs read, plant, and go full speed. This constant running laterally with their shoulders parallel to the sideline is crazy. It's like running fly sweeps almost every play! Allow the OL to man/zone up and be "hogs"!

Maybe we can hire one of Riley's ex coordinators to reinstall his offense. Wait, they all have jobs.
I swear I want to walk into CGA's office and ask what the F were you thinking this offseason...again? Or better yet, if you played through all the scenarios in you head, which one do you think turns out exactly like you got right now?
And where is this Air Raid scheme, I see virtually none of it, other than shotgun and a horrendous attempt at read option run plays minus the option.
I know it's the defense, so maybe the best strategy is to keep them off the field. I never thought I'd say this, but I miss the read option offense OSU was running at the end of last year. It was at least creative and made this whatever it is seem pedestrian.

Run a physical offense, since we can't be very physical on defense!
