www.nytimes.com/2017/08/30/sports/espn-ed-cunningham-football-concussions.html?smid=tw-nytsports&smtyp=cur&_r=0Resigns because of how dangerous the sport is to it's players. Can't be a "cheerleader" for the sport any longer. Too bad. I thought he was one of the best TV color guys today. He was captain of the University of Washington’s 1991 national championship team and a third-round draft choice in the N.F.L., where he was an offensive lineman for five seasons. He has been a broadcaster since, paired for most of the last decade with the play-by-play announcer Mike Patrick for Saturday afternoon games televised on ABC and ESPN.

I'll have to admit that my love for the game of football has waned over the past few years for exactly the same reasons. I wonder if the game became a bit more rugby like if we could cut down on all the injuries.....fewer pads and at least get rid of the helmets.

He thought the trade-off of broken noses and missing teeth would be a good trade for fewer concussions.

Rugby is a fun game to watch, even if I don't totally "get it." Gonna watch my first AFL "Granny" coming up at the end of September. www.afl.com.au/finalsGo Swans! Both sports feature a lot of physical contact with little or no padding. Some wear those soft helmets. I wonder what the CTE rate is for Rugby and Aussie Rules are?

It is illegal to tackle above the shoulders in Rugby and because there is no down by contact but rather forward progress being stopped the emphasis is on actually tackling the opponent rather than delivering a big hit. And when the situation does present a big hit it is again aimed well below the head. I would venture a guess that the concussion rate is similar to those of other contact sports like basketball/soccer.
