Those basketballs look relatively small in the hands of 6'8" juco transfer Joanna Grymek in the Tweeted video below. Looking forward to seeing what her size and skill set can do for a program that prides itself on strong, fundamental team defense.

Uncanny. She never misses Ruth Hamblin always had a tough time hitting a shot from 3 feet away. I always thought it must be Rueck's fault, that he was not helping her overcome whatever mental error she was making, since a shot like that is a gimme. However, even today, after more training for pro and national teams, Ruth can't hit that simple shot consistently. If Joanna can hit it, she'll immediately be a better offensive threat than Ruth ever was. I'd seen some video of her at her JC and it looked like she was just throwing the ball in the general direction of the basket and hoping it would fall. I'm thinking someone must now be giving her some instruction on how to use the backboard properly on those shots, and that's what she's practicing. This is a really good sign.

I'd love to have a couple more players that can throw the ball in the general direction of the basket and have 60% of them fall. Granted it was JC but still a very good shooting percentage. I hope she can transition into the pac12 with a nominal percentage loss, even 50% is good.
I'm sure she is getting instruction from somebody, not sure the coaches are allow to be involved. If not we have some very smart girls that can give her assistance, have to love the coaches kids.

Well I was referencing the twitter feed that looped over & over and over and over

"throwing the ball in the general direction of the basket" last season she was averaging 15.4 ppg, shooting 62.9%, pulling down 8.6 boards and blocking 3 shots in 25.7 minutes per game, and she was only disqualified twice in 34 games (33 starts). ( www.kjccc.org/sports/wbkb/2016-17/players/joannagrymekzrl6) And her freshman year was 13.4 ppg, shooting 60.2%, pulling down 6.6 boards and blocking 2.2 shots in 21.5 minutes per game, and she was only disqualified twice in 33 games (31 starts) . ( www.kjccc.org/sports/wbkb/2015-16/div1/players/joannagrymek85ii) I hold out hope that those sort of stats are indicators of inherent talent, not just the result of height or inferior competition. There is a reason some services had her as the #1 center / #2 juco player, and I really like that she was not playing spot duty, but sustained minutes. I really think that she could be a very pleasant surprise for the Beavers......and likely a key reason we could stay in the upper echelons of the Pac-12, since to me there is a chance she puts up numbers (and minutes) similar to what a Kolbie or Bre were giving us. I think our season will hinge on what is going on in the back court, and that we will be as good or better to last season in the low blocks this Fall between returning talent and the addition of Taya and Mo' Jo. Go Beavers!!
