Yikes. Not sure playing an opponent that bad does a whole lot for us, but hey.. better than a sharp stick in the eye.

Yikes. Not sure playing an opponent that bad does a whole lot for us, but hey.. better than a sharp stick in the eye. The team is usually called Unicaja. Unicaja finished fourth in Spain (technically, Liga ACB covers both Andorra and Spain) last year, going 22-10 in the regular season, losing to #1 Real Madrid in the semi-finals. Unicaja has qualified for 2017-2018 EuroLeague (basically like Champions League Group Stage in soccer) by winning last year's EuroCup (the equivalent of the Europa Cup Championship in soccer). In 2015, Unicaja finished third, going 25-9, losing to FC Barcelona (basketball) 3-2 in the semifinals. Unicaja won Liga ACB in 2006 and finished third in EuroLeague in 2007 behind Panathinaikos and CSKA Moscow. After they finished third, they played and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 102-99, becoming only the eighth foreign team to defeat an NBA team in the NBA's history. From watching the highlights, it looks like Unicaja played their B team at best. I am guessing that Oregon State is taking these games more seriously than their Spanish counterparts. I bet that Unicaja played a bunch of younger players.

I can't explain why the Beavs would travel half way around the globe to play such 2nd rate competition. They probably could get better games from Compton Community College. I suppose there is the Team Building aspect of a $200,000 - $300,000 (guessing) road trip. I'd hate to be the guy raising money for the MBB program and try to explain to donors why this trip came to be.
If you justify it as a learning experience for the players - -maybe. If you justify it as a team building exercise - -maybe. If you justify it as a sensible expenditure of Dept. funds - - no way.

Yeah, that's it.

Yeah, that's it. I don't see how you get $200000. Let's say 17 hotel rooms at $200/night for 10 nights = $34000 And airfare for 20 at $2000 each = $40000. Then food and entertainment and buses. Seems to me like it could be done for not much more than $100000. And since it's a gift to the players that happens just once every 4 years, that's just $25000 per year. The miracle of amortization. No big deal.

But they can't play Compton Community College, because it would violate NCAA rules. They only get an exemption to play games, if they play outside of the United States of America. Europe is the logical place to go. Plus, you can use it to recruit and to help future recruiting.

I think the same rationale for playing bowl games applies here - early and additional practice time and game situations for the players. With all the new faces we have to integrate this year, it could be incredible valuable come November - April to have this in our summer months. Looking forward to the Beavers putting up winning scores like this against counting competition come Fall.....
Go Beavs!

If this trip gets a few high level 15 and 16-year-old players interested in developing their games in Oregon, it has a high pay off.
