Ten members of next year's '17-'18 OSU women's basketball squad along with assistant coach Eric Ely are shown in the Tweet below that was posted by Kendall Knotz, the assistant to head coach Scott Rueck. Marie Gulich is apparently still in Europe and is not shown in the photo. I do not see Tarea Green among the players in the photo. The two incoming freshmen and roommates, Taya Corosdale and Aleah Goodman (in an orange Beavs t-shirt), not surprisingly are seated next to each other on the right side of the photo. Destiny Slocum, the '16-'17 Big 10 Freshman of the Year and transfer from Maryland, is shown smiling at the far right of the photo.

Here is one of the secrets to success for the WBB program: a close-knit team that is family. Almost all of the players are gathered to celebrate a new player's birthday.....and this same sort of picture could have been taken when Deven, Ali, Bre, Ruth, Sam, Syd, Alyssa, Jamie, Gabby etc. would be some of the names in the circle of faces. I think the culture that SR has established is a great recruiting advantage (assuming the potential recruit is insightful enough to value that sort of thing over glitz and glamour - which is exactly the kind of player he wants on the team). And what is really cool about this particular approach is that you can't easily clone it - you can (relatively) easily duplicate hydroponic locker rooms in a mirrored edifice built with dubious donor dollars, but either your team is a nurturing, caring, spiritual, supportive, family-oriented one, or it isn't.
The downside to this approach is that some very talented recruits are attracted to glitz, glamour, self-aggrandizement, "I'm The Franchise", me-first, all-business, "what's in it for me?" environments, and we won't be able to land them here......or they are not very discerning of superficial facsimiles of the SR sort of environments, or there are other programs that are truly similar and/or have attributes (location, climate, size, majors, ...) that the recruit values more highly.
But I guess that is what makes life interesting, and makes our tournament runs, past and future, something to cherish and celebrate even more, just like this team is doing in the photo.
Go Beavers!!

Looking at that picture really drives home all the new or relatively unknown players this year. You have the two freshman, the two transfers (only one gets to play), and Janessa who saw very little game action last year. It is going to be a fun year.
We really need to remember that Coach Rueck measures success by his players playing up to their ability and not so much on the score. That philosophy allowed him to build a national program in an unbelievably short period of time. It also allowed him to do the same at George Fox.
That said, I personally believe that with the way he coaches up his players we will have a successful year. They will find a way to win.

Kat Tudor always has either a big smile on her face or a look of extreme competitive intensity. Looking forward to a big season from her in '17-18.
