Kerry Eggers posted a new story in the Portland Tribune yesterday on Lynn Lashbrook's latest idea for MLB in Portland -- a new ballpark made from cross-laminated timber (CLT), the same material being used for the new 12 story building being constructed in the Pearl District. I know literally nothing about CLT and I know that many don't think the MLB would ever work in Portland. But I just love that someone is thinking about this idea. Will something ever happen? Probably not. But I'm bummed that I need to drive three hours to see the Mariners. Fortunately we have an elite college team in the Beavers, and the Hops put on a good show. But there is a pretty big difference between minor league ball and the MLB. portlandtribune.com/sl/366660-248408-making-wood-work-for-timber-town-baseball

I'd love for MLB to come here, but I think a Major League Quidditch team would be more Portland's speed.

Tho I would love to have MLB in my back yard instead of having to travel 300 miles to see a normally mediocre team (albeit stocked with Beav pitching now, which can only help), a MLB franchise is the most expensive pro sport to host of any of the big 4 unless you do what my beloved Reds are doing, which is keeping one star and dumping all the rest of their talent when they hit the point that they can sign their first non-rookie contract.
Be that as it may, we have the richest man in sports - Paul Allen, holding on to the Blazers and the Seahawks, and it would be nothing for him, in a relative fiscal sense, to finance a stadium and buy a team. Until we get him involved, it won't happen in Portland, and I don't see his name mentioned much in any of these speculative stories that come out every few years. It doesn't matter what gimmick is used to make the stadium unique, you have to have a team and a fan base, and until I see indicators otherwise, PDX is at best a AAA town.

Went to a Mariner game earlier this year. Here's my thoughts:
- $12.50 for a beer. Completely outrageous. - Love Safeco, great venue for watching baseball - The Blue Jays were in town and the stadium was packed with god-damned Canadians.
I don't think I'll be back for a Mariner's game unless I get free tickets or they miraculously make the World Series. It's just too damn easy to catch the games on TV.
