Playing for Bellingham last night Tommy Paul threw multiple WPs (5 in 1.1 innings the box score reads)...though I only recall 3. He's pitched less than 5 innings this summer (and only 2 innings for Beavs in 2017), so there's plenty of rust. Hopefully he'll get a chance as the summer plays out to get enough work to straighten things out.

Tommy Paul was throwing 95+ out of High School. We might be able to solve part of the problem for Tommy by importing that Ump from the CWS.... just saying.

Paul's probably got an uphill battle to make the roster next season considering we are only losing a few guys and bringing in a whole freshman class. Hopefully he can finish the summer strong and be a contributor next season.

I can think of at least 2 sophomores-to-be that WERE roster players this season, who will be hard pressed to make the roster next.

I can't imagine the decision process of one of the #26-35 guys on this roster last year hoping to make the squad again in 2018. Do you take the risk of returning to OSU, and possibly not making the roster, or do you try to transfer to somewhere you have a better shot of making the team? There's definitely more bodies than roster spots right now, and playing time for those #26-35 guys is always limited. 14 position players played more than 20 games last year, while 10 pitchers threw more than 10 innings. Only one of those position players and 2 of those pitchers are certain to be gone in 2018 with the possible return of Kyle Nobach to the position player pool.

I believe the freshman class includes 9 players. I'm sure not every single one of them will make the 35-man roster but most will. I count 30 guys on the 2017 roster that are eligible to return -- plus Nobach is 31. That already gets us to 40 guys battling for 35 spots and doesn't even consider any walkons, transfers, or guys who redshirted last year (Taylor Wright is the only name from the 2017 class I can find who didn't make the 35 man roster). I'm sure it'll mostly work itself out through transfers and injuries but it's certainly a tough spot to be in for guys like Paul, Zak Taylor, and even Mitch Hickey -- guys who are "veteran" players but don't really have a path to playing time considering who is in front of them.

If I'm not mistaken, all scholarship players will make the roster. Can a scholarship player be redshirted?

If I'm not mistaken, all scholarship players will make the roster. Can a scholarship player be redshirted? I don't think it's any different from football and basketball -- just with the limited scholarships and the ability to leave after 3 years, we don't usually like to redshirt scholarship players. But Dakota Donovan redshirted this year (even though he was on the 35 man roster) and I am assuming he's a scholarship player because he was pretty highly touted. Kyle Nobach probably has a partial scholarship and he redshirted this season due to injury. My guess is several of the incoming freshman will redshirt this season even if they make the final 35 -- we just have too much depth for 9 freshman to play next year.

The big difference from other sports is that a nonroster walk-on for baseball can't take part in team activities such as practices during the season. A scholarship guy is automatically on the 35 man roster if the guy is on scholarship for the first day of Fall ball. I think the scholarship roster aspect applies even if the scholarship guy is injured and won't play for the season. I don't think any of this has changed. I don't think Nobach had any type of athletic ride for this last season. For at least a few recent years, the final roster was not allowed to be changed once the final roster was submitted. The year prior to this, I could swear that there was a roster change during the season so that may have changed under certain circumstances.

This past season Coach Casey red-shirted two healthy scholarship players, Dakota Donovan and Elliot Willy (Nobach not included because his was an injury related shirt). A review of the tentative 2018 roster reveals the definite possibility of seeing more than two scholarship players taking a red-shirt year next season.
The Beav's last four recruiting classes have created a scenario whereby some exceptional high school players may not hit the starting lineup until their third or fourth year in the program. They should see the field but not be everyday players.
A good look in that OSU dugout tells you there is more than just a Beaver Dam in there .......there is a giant log jam.
