As many speculated Christian Folau, a four star commit in 2015 will NOT be a Beaver... BYU sure is good at stealing f0r a pious group of Mormons Fine, whatever, especially with Coack K there now kind of expected... Here is my question: I can't remember a SINGLE time we recruited a guy leaving on a mission, he committed before he left and he actually followed through on that commitment... Not faulting an 18 year old for changing his mind after 2 years of maturing and serving... just wondering why we waste our time, energy, resources and get our hopes up for these kids... Just wait and recruit them AFTER they get back (I am pretty sure we HAVE gotten a couple post mission flips...)

Probably to let them know we like them, want them when they get back.
I remember we got a guy who said he was going on his mission and changed his mind once, so maybe that's a possibility too. Also, Folau likely would have committed if Sitake had stayed.
I don't see a problem with it, really.

We have definitely gotten some post-mission flips but I can think of a few commits that stuck with us after the mission - the Unga twins both took their missions and honored their original commitment after. Folau had a connection with Coach K, he left.. I can't be mad that he followed the coach he had a connection with. That's as normal as can be iyaOA

Speaking of post mission flips, one of our very important players fits that description... Gus Lavaka was a U Hawaii commit.

I NEVER....EVER.... believe a "commit" until he/she suits up in Orange and Black. Helps keep me sane.....IF I am...

We have not heard about Moala from the same class. Folau may have been a higher rated recruit, but Moala has more upside with athleticism and size in my opinion. We will see. The upside to recruiting mission kids is you have a very mature, well rounded, closer to their peak age as an athlete player. If you do not show interest before the mission then the chances are very remote after the mission. Case in point Lavaka was recruited by coaches on staff before he went on a mission.

BYU just racks on these guys coming back. Why do they have that out/loophole? Actually, I'd rather not recruit Mormons going on missions.

To some extent the more Polynesians and Mormons we get on the team the more we will start retaining the mission kids. Utah and BYU have made a living of competitive play largely to the fact that they have had 22/23/24 year old kids playing in the trenches. I wonder what Urban Meyer's career would have looked at if he had landed at Nevada or Idaho or Wyoming or some other Mountain West team than Utah in 2003.
I don't worry about what happened 2 years ago, that class was kind of makeshift and put together on the fly. If the Beavs can win 6 or more this season it'll open some eyes and hopefully recruiting will improve all around. Having a couple kids a year stashed for two years before their eligibility begins wouldn't be a bad thing.
