The SF Giants make Nick Madrigal the first pick of the draft.

A 2nd baseman will never go No. 1 overall, but as a Dodger Fan, I like that you think SF will have the first pick!

Interesting to see Larnach up at 11. If he can finally figure out how to harness his power to the pull side, then I could see that happening. He has the best raw power on the team. I saw him a ball over the batters eye at Goss during BP before the regional game against Yale.

He does not have the arm strength. His only position at the ML level is second base. Grenier is better overall Shortstop, but hey that is my opinion. Barney had a stronger arm in college than Nick and where does Barney play 98% of the time? Second Base!

However, some MLB teams might be tempted to draft him as a SS. The Giants did that with Joe Panik -- drafted him as a SS. He plays 2B for the same reasons you mention regarding Madrigal.

They drafted Panik as a SS because he was a SS in college. They switched him to mostly 2B at AA because they have a pretty darn good SS already and wanted to prepare him for where the opening was with the big league team.

Also, Barney has played fewer than 85% of his MLB innings at 2B, while getting plenty of PT at SS and 3B. That said, I think most teams these days are going to put a 5'8" guy at 2B instead of SS.

He hasn't the arm for SS in the bigs. Watched him several games at SS in Keiser-Salem. He's not that strong.

And now he's a gold glove 2B.
