Yes, and a number of alumni, i.e. grads, refer to it as FSU because everyone in California calls it Fullerton State. Sacramento is Sacramento State; San Francisco is SF State; Stanislaus i,s Stanislaus State; Sonoma is Sonoma State; etc,. Although, the California Polytechnical Universities, San Luis Obispo and Pomona are referred to as Cal Poly Pomona or San Luis Obispo. I can see this is important to you. But I've never heard or read of anyone referring to them as "Fullerton State" or "FSU". Only "Fullerton" or "Cal State Fullerton". Oregon State's media guide interchangeably refers to the Cal State school in Fullerton as "Cal State Fullerton," "Fullerton State," "CSF Fullerton," and "CS-Fullerton." I prefer Fullerton State, as it is the most logical and easiest name for them and consistent with the typical Cal State naming convention of dropping Cal entirely, when referring to a school. As a general rule, we call places whatever we want to call them, not what they want to be called. We call it Germany, not Deutschland; Greece, not Ellas; Israel, not Yisrael; Japan, not Nippon. I call it Fullerton State, because F what Fullerton State wants to call themselves.

In the early 70's the Cal system "regularized" all the school names to "University of California, XXX", "California State University, XXX", and "California Polytechnic, XXX". It was mostly an attempt to enhance the prestige of the satellite schools by hoping that folks would confuse them with the "real" University of California". It was also an attempt to centralize administration - the conceit is that there are just three schools (UC, CSU, Cal Poly), each with multiple campuses. (Sort of like OSU with its Bend campus). As it happens, schools were happy to pretend that they were more prestigious but they were unwilling to give up any local authority. And sports fans were particularly unwilling to go along.
So, although officially it is CS-Chico, CS-Fresno, etc.., many of those schools prefer to go by Chico State, Fresno State, etc.. as much as they can. For some, it's about continuity and history, for some it's just a way to poke back at the central authority. For the most part, the older and more sports-oriented the school, the more likely they prefer being XXX State.
As for Fullerton, it's a fairly young school and was never officially Fullerton State. (It was briefly Orange State College.) I can't find any "Fullerton State" logos or apparel. So anyone referencing "Fullerton State" is either confused or trying to make a point about being ruled from Sacramento. (And there are plenty of folks in Orange County that would like to make that particular point.)

So, Joe, do you think that Germans are worrying that they call us the Verinigte Staaten von Amerika, not the United States of America?

So, Joe, do you think that Germans are worrying that they call us the Verinigte Staaten von Amerika, not the United States of America? Was this before or after they bombed Pearl Harbor? I lived in Fullerton for several years. Everyone called it Cal State Fullerton. No one called it Fullerton State, unlike people call Chico State and Sacramento State and some others. For now, why don't we just call them "toast"?
