Here are my non-statistical thoughts of tonight's game:
1) LSU is very cocky and deservedly so, as they are an excellent overall team. However, it can also be problematic as I've seen them play sloppy when they think they should win in a walk (the start of the Texas Southern game is a prime example...5 errors total as I recall). While their coach really respects us, I'm not sure the players do because of the arrogance resulting from the "SEC mystique". Just recall how Vandy looked shell-shocked after we worked them over.
2) Their starting pitching is HIGHLY mercurial. They are either nails or way off...I don't see much in-between. They also tend to be a bit emotional, especially if they aren't getting borderline calls. If our boys are aggressive early, it can be advantageous to us.
3) I'm not overly impressed with their pen and if you talk to a reasonable LSU fan (piles of them in my office), they'll readily admit it.
4) Like the Beavers, LSU will grind at you. All the proof you need is to see how many times they've come from behind to win this year, especially in the playoffs. If (when) the Beavs get a lead, they had better keep the foot on the gas all the way, much like we did against Vandy in the late innings. Ask FSU what happens when you don't.
5) LSU can absolutely hit, but they also show a lack of discipline at the plate. They will get frustrated, especially if Blue is giving pitchers the fringe areas of the zone. WARNING...Bryce had better be on, because if he's not LSU will light his ass up like a Christmas Tree. While I believe that Bryce will have another great game, I'd be surprised if Eisert and a couple of others don't start the game in the pen "playing catch" in anticipation of that very thing. Look for a VERY quick hook from Casey and Yeskie today.
6) As I mentioned earlier, LSU can be prone to errors especially if the pressure is on. Considering who we are and the kind of pressure game we play, I expect a few errors by the Tigers tonight that we will be able to take advantage of.
7) Bunting in the SEC seems to be a lost art as they take their hacks almost every time. This also means our strong bunting game should be problematic for them as they don't see it very often throughout the year.
Bottom line: LSU is very good and I know the team will show them the appropriate amount of respect...as do the common-sense members of Beaver Nation. But just like every other game we've played all year, this game is about US and how WE play. If we do what we've done all year...patience at the plate, excellent fielding to back up our pitching, grind, no panic, keep the pressure on and come out strong from the pen as necessary, what LSU does or does not do will be irrelevant.
I'm very excited to see how we will play in our biggest game of the year and I fully expect our winning streak to continue.
GO BEAVS!
