Following the loss to graduation and/or grad transfer of Wiese, Hanson, Orum, and Brown, the four newest additions (Grymek, Slocum, Corosdale, and Goodman) to the OSU women's basketball program will be on campus and presumably training together next week.

I think they will actually be part of the staff (volunteers?) for Scott Rueck's various basketball camps as well..... www.oregonstatewbbcamps.com/Go Beavs!

Really looking forward to see how Corosdale transitions to big girl basketball. I'm unclear about summer basketball training, and practices that take place under coaches supervision.
Does anyone know if summer practices are open? Closed? Can observers just pop in and watch? Or should one try to get permission ahead of time from someone in the AD?
I have some business to handle in Corvallis & OSU this summer, and I'd love to get a first-hand look at some of the new faces..Assuming it's do-able.... Any information about how I would go about doing this would be appreciated.....Thanks......

I would suggest contacting Sharon Rissmiller, OSU's Director of Operations for the women's basketball program. Sharon likely knows when and where the open gym opportunities are scheduled to arise and if fans can catch a glimpse of the players in action in those informal sessions. Sharon's e-mail as posted on the OSU athletics website is: sharon.rissmiller@oregonstate.edu
As 2ndGenBeaver has speculated in an above post, the current and future OSU women's basketball players will likely be involved with helping at the OSU basketball camps during late June.

The preparations for the new players are underway. The jersey numbers for the four new additions are as follows:
1 Aleah Goodman 5 Taya Corosdale 11 Joanna Grymek 24 Destiny Slocum
I would think that Sydney Wiese's #24 OSU jersey will one day be retired at Gill Coliseum. Hopefully, Destiny Slocum will take good care of that jersey number during her three seasons playing for the Beavs. I think that Sydney would approve of Destiny carrying on the outstanding OSU point guard tradition associated with that jersey number.

Destiny was #5 at Maryland. I imagine that she is well aware of who had #24 before her and I like the statement that she is making.

I usually don't get wrapped up in jersey #s, but this one is a bit intriguing...
Accepting # 24 is a statement by Slocum that she sees herself as a major player in the program; it is a statement by Coach R that it is OK to think of Destiny in these lofty terms (which, of course, elevates fan expectations), and that she deserves the chance to be considered a Sydney Wise calibre player down the line...It also is a tip of the hat to team unity by Coach R indicating that he does not see anything wrong with this particular newcomer coming into the program with guns a blazin'.....
Is there a more obvious way for Coach R to say that he expects GREAT things from Destiny Slocum?.

Slocum wore jersey #24 during her Mountain View HS playing days as well as for her AAU team, Idaho Hoop Dreams. I saw that #24 for Maryland was taken last year by Stephanie Jones, the younger sister of 6'3" senior star Brionna Jones.

Good research beavershoopsfan - - maybe the #24 thing is not nearly as significant as I thought !!

Good research beavershoopsfan - - maybe the #24 thing is not nearly as significant as I thought !! I think that your thoughts about the significance of the women's basketball jersey #24 at OSU are still very relevant. Destiny's request to wear #24 at OSU had to be approved by the coaching staff. The coaching staff must have the understanding that there is a strong chance that Sydney's #24 will be raised to the Gill rafters at some point in the future. I believe that Destiny's request to wear #24 for OSU is likely intended to pay homage to what Sydney has helped achieve with the program as well as for Destiny's own personal jersey number preference. Beaver fans will appreciate the swagger that Slocum plays with as well as the sharing of the basketball that she will bring to the floor. Slocum wouldn't be the player that she has become and enjoyed the success that she has without being confident in her abilities to lead a team from the point guard position and have a major impact on how her team fares in every game. Beaver fans will hear the same stories during the next four years (including one redshirt season) that I have heard over the past five years about Slocum being a gym rat and spending countless extra hours in pursuit of being the best player that she can be. She projects to be a very good fit for the OSU basketball program going forward. Any player on the team looking for a shooting partner and/or wanting put some extra time in working on her basketball skills won't need to look very far with Slocum in Corvallis.

beavershoopsfan - -I've only been on this board a few months but I am rapidly becoming a fan of your work !! For one thing, you write in complete paragraphs - a disappearing art form in the sports forum universe.... For another thing, your paragraphs make sense. For another thing, we both sense that great things are going to be happening at Gill in WBB during the next few years...

The newbies are here! As noted in a post above by 2ndGenBeaver, they are being put to work during the OSU team camp this week after helping out at the OSU Elite Camp at the end of last week.
