I truly do not think there is any reason for Luke to return to this 'hornets nest'. This will be a much more prevalent story if he stays here and I'm not sure I believe Mr. Ray actually "wants" Luke to return. Or, if Luke even feels like the "university" truly wants him as the student/athlete. Ed Ray and the Athletic department (which I assume are following "orders") have lost my complete respect and $$$ (along with several others who sent in our feelings, although the note has no business in a public forum). One of the main charges of such a fine institution is to support and aide in the success of all students/athletes from all sorts of differing backgrounds. Luke has done nothing while at OSU, nor since being adjudicating, to have that support withdrawn and not reinforced in the time of most need. The university and Ed Ray failed in their charge here, and to me it is obvious they caved to public/donor pressures of what is "right. As far a jc... I have always thought he was the lowest of low... the modern day Geraldo Rivera. I never understood how a supposedly respected news organization put up with his escapades. I never understood how a woman I used to think was a fair and honorable journalist and news reporter could marry the clown. I never understood how a radio station could give him further "voice". But, I also believe in karma... and only hope he never has to endure the pain his numerous irresponsible stories have caused, But, make no mistake, in true jc style if Luke stays he'll try to turn this into a jc story of human interest and overcoming all odds. He never misses a self promotion chance and one to cover his arse on both sides of an issue. He's never wrong, as the biggest hypocrite in the media he eventual takes both sides. The guy is a farce and doesn't even deserve the space given to disrespect him! I mostly agree with you. Luke and the family that supports him probably know that there is no reason to return to OSU. He would gain nothing from a baseball or life perspective. In addition, it sounds like the administration did what they thought was best for their public relations and not what is best for Luke, the team or the greater university. Obviously not knowing any facts about the main actors but it probably was not even best for the girl. Thinking about baseball, Luke has thrown a lot of stressful innings this year and shutting it down for the summer is not a bad thing. I'm very surprised that a team did not draft him sometime after the first five rounds. In my experience more people than not will stand behind and try to help someone who genuinely wants to correct mistakes and live a righteous life. From what we have read over the last week, Heimlich falls into this category. I am hopeful there is a quiet bidding war that is about to start and LH finds a suitor and a $200Kish bonus. We would all be better off if that little o columnist takes a job with a paper in Lubbock, or Little Rock, or Boone, NC or . . . . . Lets back up a bit on disparaging Boone, NC I had heard of Appalachian State, but had no clue where they were from. Until I was killing time and walking the streets of Boone, NC one day. I kept hearing a loud roar occasionally. Turned out that App. State was having a Home Football Game. I would put Boone, NC on a par and maybe a bit above Corvallis as being a really, really neat Football town. It's a little heavy on the tourist people but, worth a visit. They do not deserve a jerk like the canz. |

Hopefully someone can confirm what I think I watched during the Vandy series: Coach Casey gave a brief but positive statement saying that he supported LH, believed in him and that he had a spot on this team. To me, it sounded like if it was up to him (coach Casey) Luke would have pitched that night. The statement came on kind of quick and I might have heard wrong. Hopefully someone can either ve himconfirm what I thought I heard or, confirm that I'm in fact, not a good listener. You're a good listener. He did say that. Casey does rightfully believe in Luke. It's a long way until February, but I believe there is a (possible) pathway out there for Luke 2018 Beaver. If anyone can make it happen, it's Pat Casey. The announcers asked Casey what went into the decision to not pitch LH. Casey said "that was his decision." That being LH. Also, on the free agent possibility for LH. As much as I would like to believe that could happen, I believe it won't happen. If any team wanted to give LH a chance they would have drafted him in the late rounds. No team wants to have anything to do with the situation especially since it is still simmering. I am not saying it is fair just the reality of it. |

The cut-off date for signing free-agents is: When they are back at school. So, it's possible for Luke to sign as a free-agent until some time in late September. As was suggested somewhere else in this thread, teams could be waiting until August 27. |

I have to say I'm in full agreement with baseba1111 here (bound to happen sooner or later!!).
LH fulfilled his responsibility to the legal system long before he came to OSU. He's been an exemplary student and poses no threat to either his instructors or his fellow students. As such, OSU's overarching responsibility to Luke, as with all OSU students in good standing, is a max effort to ensure their academic success and future success in life generally.
Instead, Ed Ray has tried to play this down the middle but with a skew toward the expedient....worry about the public relations aspect first and Luke second. Like baseba1111, I will no longer donate to the OSU Foundation. But I did write a $1000 check to OSU baseball and presented that personally to Pat Casey just before the team left for Omaha.
As for the news coverage -- the Oregonian, Moran and JC have caused, and continue to cause, needless, gratuitous pain in order to attract attention to themselves. On the other hand, Kerry Eggars and the Tribune have brought some balance and perspective to the whole issue. Remember that next time you decide where to go for coverage of news and sports in Oregon.
In terms of LH's future, I believe that PC truly does have Luke's best interest at heart and that's who LH should listen to. How his baseball program "looks" PR-wise generally, or, more specifically, to the Oregonian's perverted, damaging view of what constitutes "news," is of secondary importance to Pat.
In the future, keep in mind who played what role in pointlessly exposing and exploiting this personal tragedy, or who reacted in a weak, expedient fashion to it's needless publication.

Go Beavs! Moran is four years out of college. He has been covering college sports for two years. His other two years of experience were covering high school sports. Per his LinkedIn page, he was the beneficiary of an elite education in Chicago. Eighteen years of private school: Fourteen at Francis W. Parker School ($30,000/yr) tuition and four at Northwestern ($50,000/yr). I'm guessing he has greater aspirations than being a beat reporter at the Oregonian. He will be hustling this in Omaha, while interviewing for better jobs at the same time. He is a climber with no empathy for the types of individuals he interviewed in the LH story. |

August = expunge...because Luke has done all the right things. Depending on the quality of the true redemption story that emerges - from Pat Casey, from Luke himself, from journalist's like Eggers, or from President Ray, any attempt in BB season 2018 by pond-scum like Canzano to re-open all of this will be substantially less effective. Most people 'get it' that second chances have validity. Even o-live's "Should Luke Heimlich have played in the College World Series?" poll thingy (what a terrible piece of web UI design, btw) has "Yes" at 55% and no at 36% (with 9%... undecided? again the poll thingy is terrible UI). This is the real reason the comments are closed... after the initial outrage people have come more to their senses and the comments became more and more Luke favorable (and anti their narrative) so... buh bye comments  |

In terms of OSU/Ed Ray... I have a softer response to them than most of you... I count them as yet another victim to the oregonians sleazy, sensationalist, needless and gratuitous "reporting".
Luke was a villian 6 years ago, but this time around, IMHO, the only villain is the awful, stupid, misinformed, underinvestigated, and only bad for all parties "journalism" of the oregonian... and of course clownzano is even worse by editorializing the whole thing over and over to nobody's benefit but his own. They victimized the original victim, Luke, all of the other beaver baseball players, all of their fans AND OSU and Ed Ray.
OSU and Dr Ray have truly been put into a no win situation, and while I was annoyed at the slowness of their response I can't find much fault in it. Once the genie was "out of the bottle" there isn't much they could do to put it back in they could only manage that it was out. And they have a LOT of constituencies and parties to think about and manage, in reality they really COULDN'T just take a hard line of support of Luke. I respect Pat Casey a ton and also don't doubt he would have played Luke last weekend and this weekend, but even the opinion on that in this message board is highly mixed. I myself am torn... while I want Luke to pitch because I want the beavers to win and I believe in second chances I also don't want 3 straight weeks (supers and CWS) of outrage directed at OSU and also don't want any win to have a "they did it with a child molestor" astrix (which will be there already, but be even worse if we did it with a KNOWN child molestor).
Anyways, yeah Ed Ray had a lot of people and opinions to manage and sure PCness too, and even at that he didn't exactly "throw Luke under the bus" he could have done much worse than agreeing with Luke's decision (or highly encouraged it) to step away for the rest of the year.
In the end I still support OSU, Ed Ray, and Beaver Baseball. I pray that the poor girl (the real, true victim in ALL of this, article included) leads a happy and healthy life and that she isn't getting any grief from all this and I hope Luke does get the chance to lead a successful live, I hope he makes it in baseball, makes millions of dollars and uses that money to bless his victims life and become an outspoken advocate for BOTH sex victims rights and recovery efforts and for the rights and recovery for perpetrators as well, especially juveniles. There are already several groups working towards it (Women Against Registry, etc)
