This was a fun exercise we did at one of our Beaver lunches recently. Looking only at the Beaver Baseball teams from 2006, 2007, or 2017, who would you put on your roster? Stick to position players for now; the pitchers are a whole other monster.
Here are the choices:
C: Canham or Rutschman
1B: Rowe or Lennerton or Harrison
2B: Kunda or Wong or Madrigal
SS: Barney or Grenier
3B: McFeeley or (D. George/Lechelt) or Gretler
LF: Gillespie or (Wallace/Wells) or Donahue
CF: Graham or Hopkins or Kwan
RF: Wallace or Lissman or Anderson
DH: Lissman or Ogata or Larnach
My picks:
C: The easy choice is Canham, but Adley could overtake him in a year or two both in terms of baseball ability and leadership. But right now, Mitch, of course..
1B: Harrison
2B: Madrigal (duh)
SS: Barney
3B: Tough call between McFeeley and Gretler. I think I'd go with Gretler, his defense is so good. I'm just happy to have a third baseman where both the bat and the glove are as reliable as what I remember from McFeeley. Seems like most years, that is a luxury we don't have...
LF: Gillespie (not even close)
CF: Graham in a close one. Kwan's bat is really coming on, but Graham brings so many skillsets.
RF: All 3 are good players. My heart says Anderson (he's one of my favorites on this team), but it's hard to pass up Lissman's .317 avg and 10 HR's from his 2007 senior year.
DH: Tough choice between Lissman and Larnach, but if I've already got 2007 Lissman then I'll take Trevor.
This gives me 4 out of 9 spots occupied by the 2017 team; not bad! How many are in your all-championship team?
The next exercise would be an all-Omaha team, consisting of players from each of the 5 teams that made it to the CWS. Off the top of my head, this would put Conforto in play against Gillespie, Jacoby against Graham/Kwan, and Andy Jenkins in play at either 1B, 3B, or DH (I honestly don't remember where he played more). That would probably garner a lot more discussion.
GO BEAVS!
