Sydney has a personality where she is able to put her exuberance on display without holding back. I expect in LA the media and the WNBA will soon figure this out - assuming she can duplicate her breakout performance from the other night (things worked out well - I expect there was a large crowd in the house for the ring ceremony). If the WNBA wants to spotlight a good player, a good person, and an interesting person, then Sydney is perfect for the role. Disclaimer - I have no idea what the demographics of the average WNBA fan are, so I don't know if Syd hits the suitability criteria in that regard.
Go Beavs!

I wonder if LA fans can still recognize *genuine* exuberance and character - everything and everyone is so artificial there. Clearly the TV guy had a ball interviewing her - that's a start.

Sorry - I missed it. My apologies if anyone was offended. This board is pretty sparse in the off-season (for all OSU women's' sports).

Not sure what your "demographic" disclaimer even means. In the crowded LA sports entertainment market, if you're a winner you will get attention, publicity and respect. If you've got an engaging personality to go with it you will get even more. Not terribly different from Corvallis.

To to think that people in LA won't respond favorably to Sydney is just silly.

Poster I was responding to said: "I expect in LA the media and the WNBA will soon figure this out - assuming she can duplicate her breakout performance from the other night (things worked out well - I expect there was a large crowd in the house for the ring ceremony). If Syd has success in LA with the WNBA she will be appreciated and "spotlit" there just like she is in Corvallis. Why wouldn't she? It's kind of vain/silly to think that only quaint, homespun little ol Cornvalley can truly appreciate Sydney, don't you think? Dont forget, Syd came to us from a big city - Phoenix. She's not some BC farmgirl like Ruth or even an Eastern WA smalltowner like Jamie.

I have no idea how successful Syd will be in the WNBA. But I would NEVER sell her short. Where she goes, she makes fans. Don't we all want that?

I'm leery to offer clarification, since you and baseba1111 are having a lively debate without me needing to chime in :-)..... All I was trying to say is: I kept track of the WNBA only long enough last season to see Jamie and Ruth make the opening day roster, and then basically just looked in on stats once in a while.......I don't watch the WNBA. The number of hours I watched *any* professional sports this past year could be counted on my fingers and toes with a couple left over. I am so busy and have so many hobbies that I basically only watch TV sports when the OSU Beavers are on. This season, since the first Sparks game was on an ESPN channel I get, I DVR'ed it, then fast forwarded to the 13 minutes of Syd and her first 6 WNBA points. I don't have a good idea of what demographic the WNBA is trying to "reach" with the players they focus on, the age group, the qualities, etc. I have spent the last quarter century in corporate America, so I am very conscious that any business has a brand and a consumer demographic they are especially trying to appeal to.......and I have no clue who that is for the WNBA. You are correct that LA has a large enough population that Sydney will appeal to some segment of that population. Is that a segment the WNBA is trying to connect with? I don't know. That is all I was trying to indicate with my disclaimer, while noting the WNBA could do far worse than highlight Sydney. Go Beavs!
