Eugene Dave--with all due respect, baseball is probably the best example of a game that is affected by luck--How can you have a doubleheader with the first game score 1-0 and the second game 10-7??? When your top offensive players fail something like 65-70% of the time?? When you get a close call one way or the other that is pretty much judgment??
The Warrior theme is overbaked even if valid. There was a day when a contest was a contest, not a matter of life and death. I would bet that anyone who has played sports seriously, hates to lose--but not enough to kill someone over it.
I am all in on our baseball team. They seem to be charmed as well as talented. But, I am still smarting from the 26-2 experience in MBB some years ago. Strange things happen to good teams especially those whose fans think too far ahead. Win the next one and see what happens--that is the way to keep the karma where it belongs IMO.

How is it possible that I agree with nobody on this post?? Eugene Dave's passion is commendable, but I also think that speaking as if we are preordained to hoist a trophy next month is what leads to people playing the blame game: say Jenkins sends a guy that gets cut down at home, ending a rally, or Casey puts in a reliever that has an off day at the worst time - do we crucify the kid or the coach? Sadly, the kid will get the brunt of that. Or will it be the umpires, who don't call a borderline pitch in our favor? Then is it "the bias" coming after us again? Will ESPN have pulled the strings to get one of "their" darlings a championship?
But guys, going after Eugene Dave for saying "vanquish?" C'mon. You know what he meant and there was no disrespect meant at all to people who actually risk their lives for God and Country. It might not be the most "comfortable" analogy, but in no ways was it meant to belittle or demean actual soldiers. It's just being petty on your part to take him to task over that.
Besides, the WSU did said our offense won't kill anyone, and nobody jumped down his throat for being insensitive to homicide victims. So cut the crap. We are all on the same team here.

It might not be the most "conforatable" analogy, but in no ways was it meant to belittle or demean actual soldiers. It's just being petty on your part to take him to task over that. All you read was vanquished? Nothing about war? And, the testosterone excused rebuttal? I don't believe anyone who has half a brain when called on for comparing athletics to war spouts off with such a lame red neck uneducated post in their defense. You stick to defending such nonsense. It's a game it's not disabling, dismembering, life or death. And, any comparison is excusable as it happens in our culture too much... EXCEPT when called on it and then it's defended.

To borrow from your playbook, baseba1111, I'm going straight to ol' dictionary.com for the definition of war....of which there are many. #7 is: a struggle to achieve a goal Holy crap! That sounds exactly like what the Oregon State baseball team is going through RIGHT NOW. So yes, it could mean he was talking about an armed conflict between two nations, and his backing of the war imagery when called out seems to confirm this. But again, we jumped down his throat, and nothing he said was all that bad. Homeruns are called "bombs." Sinkers are referred to as "cannonballs." The term "dagger" is used all the time in late game situations. Nobody (at least nobody I know) uses these terms with any connection whatsoever to Nagasaki or murderous pirates or Jack the Ripper, and nobody ever questions their use. So I'm not sure why his use of war, vanquish and whatever other terms he used were so out of line.

Ignorance is bliss. Hopefully you stay that way with regard to the effects of a real war.

I am fairly new to this board but I have 2 observations to share. 1. Would love to grab a beer with Eugene Dave someday. Hopefully in a month or so...in Omaha. 2. I would pass on any offer to have a beer with Baseball1111....ever. Go Beavs!

to quote my middle school football coach "The more you sweat in peace the less you bleed in war" every game is a battle and every win is a win and the season easily constitutes a war. And the idiots who equate athletics to war have never been in war! Or,if so shouldn't be coaching kids of that's their belief! "Stand, Navy, out to sea, fight our battle cry, we'll never change our course, so vicious foe steer shy-y-y Roll out the TNT (boom!), anchors aweigh, sail on to victory and sink their bones to Davy (Eugene Dave?) Jones hooray!" First verse of the US Naval Academy's fight song for collegiate athletics. So there's that.
