the question is out there- too many innings for these guys? Are they really even pitching that much? I tried to line up some stats but the D1 site stats are two weeks old it seems just for the top pitchers. This show Luke and Jake have thrown more innings than the other top pitchers. Add the complete games this weekend and that surplus becomes higher:
Player Team W L ERA APP GS CG SHO SV IP H R ER BB SO WP HP OBA
Luke Heimlich Oregon State 7 1 0.71 12 12 1 0 0 88.1 49 9 7 19 99 1 9 .162
Jake Thompson Oregon State 9 0 1.07 12 11 0 0 0 76.0 41 10 9 24 78 0 3 .159
Sean Mooney St. John's 6 0 1.07 12 9 1 1 0 75.2 43 10 9 14 68 3 2 .165
Andrew Crane Troy 5 1 1.10 13 5 0 0 0 49.0 32 9 6 9 48 1 4 .179
Danny Marsh Wagner 6 1 1.14 10 10 2 1 0 63.1 41 11 8 27 55 2 4 .185
Nate Harris Louisiana Tech 7 0 1.31 19 6 3 2 8 75.2 53 16 11 9 84 6 1 .193
Clarke Schmidt South Carolina 4 2 1.34 9 9 0 0 0 60.1 41 15 9 18 70 0 4 .194
Casey Mize Auburn 6 1 1.39 10 10 1 0 0 64.2 50 16 10 8 86 1 2 .205
Beau Sulser Dartmouth 6 1 1.40 7 7 4 1 0 45.0 31 10 7 5 52 0 1 .201
Nick Gallagher Binghamton 7 1 1.41 10 9 0 0 0 57.2 37 14 9 23 50 2 6 .180
of course that view is very shuttered. That stat is ERA based, which could be fluky and is actually skewed by some of the lower numbers of IP of these guys so not sure what that means. Maybe these guys get tired and get pulled before they get their ERA damaged. Can't tell without more stat digging. Blowcheese is way too lazy for that.
So what about pitchers on good teams?
the best overall pitchers (combo of wins, era and KO) for each D1 site top 10 team
brendan mckay, Louisville 85
J.B. Bukauskas, North Carolina 82
Colton Hock, Stanford 42.2
Stephen Gingery, Texas Tech 79.1
Alex Faedo, Florida 90.1
Dave Smith, Long Beach State 61.0
Sean Hjelle, Kentucky 88.0 by the way this kid is 6 feet 11 !
Jared Janczak, TCU 63.0
Riley Self, Missipissi St. 39.1
alex lange LSU 90.1
I don't think i trust these numbers either, because the D1 site is not updating their stats in a timely fashion and i am picking the pitcher with the best combination of ERA and games won with KOs as tiebreaker, but how do i really know who their horse is?
So what i really need is a count of total pitches for all pitchers on the top 25 teams that i can sort. Does anyone know where this might be?
And that is just to prove that Luke and Jake throw more pitches than the competing pitchers.
Next question: if true, is that a bad thing? The TV announcers laughed about 20 year olds needing rest but pitcher arms go bad on kids all the time. Why are the beav coaches ok with Jake and Luke throwing complete games at this point in the year and in games that dont decide anything? I want to believe this is to condition them for regionals, supers and then Omaha. If they get used to going 8 or 9 innings and doing it very well, then the beavs will eliminate teams earlier and play less games. So the thinking goes.
But giving the middle relievers and closers lots of innings to tune them up isn't really happening. Is that a concern?
