Not scientific, but my WAG Smith is in a favorable situation (for HIM) regarding money and years w his ASU contract. He has strong public statement support from AD (though who knows what lurks behind the scenes). It looks like he'll be given another year or two to 'prove out' his abilities to develop a program. Their current freshman class (the ones on the field right now) are supposedly the #1 ranked 2017 recruiting class. I personally doubt it. My evidence is simply that Carter Aldrete is one of their premier recruits - and he starts every game at SS or 2B. He and George Mendazona were both HS grad Bend Elks infielders in the summer of 2016 - and I saw them often. I thought Mendazona was clearly better in the field and at the plate. The fact that Aldrete plays every inning and George rarely sniffs the diamond says it all. If Aldrete were a Beaver, I'm not sure he'd make the roster. |

ASU is in purgatory. Some of the fan base hopes they lose all remaining games in order to facilitate the firing of Smith as coach.. Others, understandably pull for the Sun Devils to win. They beat WSU today (May 13), after losing the opener last night.
A typical reaction on the fan forum:
"Man I'm so torn. While I'm glad we won it's tough knowing that these type of games help keep Mister Fraud around as the coach. It's winning the battle to lose the war.
...Winning in spite of Smith. Best of both worlds and still exposes that con mans embarrassing lack of coaching skillz."
