I may have just missed it, but I was unclear about what happened with the double play at home. Why didn't the batter try to take first after striking out? In other words, why did the umpire call him out?

With 1st base occupied and less than 2 outs the batter is out without a play. If their were 2 outs the batter could have run, but the play at home would have been a force play with just a tag of home plate sufficient for the out.
