Interesting season for them...
They've cleaned up on the bottom of the league, 9 of their wins coming in sweeps against WSU/ASU/USC - and they've been fortunate enough to get all 3 of those teams at home where they have a 15-6 home record vs 5-15 road record.
1st in the Pac-12 with 34 home runs (we have 14). Their 1B/P Vaughn is hitting .355 12 HR 45 RBI
.287 Team BA (tied with us for 3rd), 5.16 team ERA, 9th in the league. Also lead the league in SB and SB attempts.
They are also in week 2 of their absolutely brutal end of season schedule, facing #1/#9/#12/#13 RPIs down the stretch. Ouch.
At UW (lost 2 of 3) At OSU Vs Stanford VS TCU At Arizona
Safe bet that their days in the top 1/3 of the standings are numbered.
Also, don't look now, but worst case scenario - ASU is hosting a red hot Stanford team, they could be sitting in sole possession of last place after this weekend. That's a pretty hot seat for Smith.
Around the league - USC at UCLA, UW and Zona get to beat each other up, ducks at WSU, Utah hosts UC Riverside.

ASU's HC is on the ejection seat already, I think. Where they are in the Pac-12 from a baseball proud school with their tradition; does not bode well for him.

Maybe.. depends on their financial situation. He received extensions after each of his first 2 seasons and now under contract until 2021. Side note - He will also get to say he was the coach that broke ASU's 54 year old streak of consecutive 30+ win seasons. I think he'll play the "we are really young" card and get 1 more year.

I think he'll play the "we are really young" card and get 1 more year. Isn't everybody really young in baseball? It's pretty consistent that the best players, heck, even just the good players, leave after their junior year. It seems like every team has to play freshman a lot to thrive in D-1 baseball.

I agree with this, but at the same time, I have no doubt he'll use it. And one could even say we're a pretty veteran team by college baseball standards... Plus we've got guys like Max who have been here for 8 years. (don't fact check that)

A couple other Cal stats that stand out. They have issued 201 free passes compared to our 106. They have un-corked 52 Wild pitches compared to our 17. They have also plunked 42 batters compared to our 23. If the Beavers are patient in the box...Cal will put us on for free.

That should help get the runs per game number up, for those that think it is important. I wouldn't mind beating up on Cal, but Ihope they save the slaughter for the ducks.

The Beavs have a veteran defense, all sophs and juniors. Also veteran starters, There is a lot of frosh talent riding our bench or waiting for that chance to get into the starting rotation - the future looks bright

What I see of concern/threat from Cal is the long ball. If we let them hang around and keep games close it only takes one great swing from guys who are confident they can go yard, even on a great pitch and "wala".... you are losing.
I love our pitching staff but I sure hope the offense gives them lots of support so they can pound the zone all weekend and not worry about solo shots or 2 run homers putting Cal in the lead late in a game.
That is all... back to your regular scheduled programming.

I would love to see us really pull away in a game and then give those talented freshmen riding the bench a chance to pick up some experience.
