It's well acknowledged that the Beavers staff has eye-popping numbers - and results.
Having Jake Thompson tomorrow as a "#3" starter is about as good as it gets for a "Sunday" starter.
For the season he's 7-0 with an 1.18 ERA and a .150 BA against. WHIP = 0.84
Pretty similar for PAC 12 only: 3-0 with a 0.99 ERA and a .151 BA against. WHIP = 0.88.
Way back when, someone on this board observed that the key to the season was Jake T's performance. 31 games later, the 29-2 record speaks to that.
At that time, back in Feb., I opined that an offensive key to the season was whether Grenier could adjust to D1 pitching, in the same manner that T. Morrison and M. Gretler did after tough freshman years at the plate. Boy howdy! Grenier has learned to go oppo when appropriate, improved immensely on plate discipline...and the result is a .404 BA and .635 Slg% in fourteen PAC 12 games, so far.
Fun team. Great coaching.

I can't check but he said it was tomorrow's starters side by side?? Lol... Well, we know Jake doesn't have a 3.25 and Fehmel did. I only say this because when they showed the graphic I didn't realize Fehmel's era was that high, so I checked his stats. This was early in the game so maybe they botched the graphic later on.

Thought it was pretty poor work by the network. Someone accidentally carried over Fehmel's stats for Thompson in a preview of the next game.

Jake is a luxury.... to be able to shut out (team contribution of pitching and good defense) a Pac 12 team on Sunday is a very rare thing.
I'd love to see a statistic on how many conference shut outs there have been on Sundays in the year to last 3 years....
Gotta love the Pitching and Defense stepping it up when the bats went a little quiet in key situations.
I will leave you with this question to ponder.... where does Drew fit in as he returns? And trust me... I think he will have a role, I can't wait to see what it is.
Go BEAVS!

I'd guess he gets some Tues relief work, maybe a short stint start since that is what he is used to. Depending on when he's ready to go there is not much room left except in 6-8th inning setup guy. IF... he was able to throw next week and progressed I could see him get a Pac 12 start vs WSU and the last NC series. But, there is really no reason to have him do anything but relieve. Again, it's not a role or mindset he's used to, so it neefs to be selective situations IMHO.

If I had to guess, I'd think they'd give Drew some low leverage relief spots initially - similar to how they used Hickey the first few times, we were up comfortably and had someone else ready right behind him if it went off the rails.

Not arguing any of that but if there is one pitcher on this roster who I would mentally trust in any situation it is Drew.
I've never had TJ surgery so I'm only guessing.... that there probably is a time period of trusting your body again to do what it was doing...
My only point is look out, this staff is only getting better!

I remember the bad ol' days when no one had a Sunday starter. It was have lunch before the game and be ready to stop after and have supper right after the game. Games were 15-13, 14-12 and the like. Guys would come from SS or the OF to try to finish things. I remember leaving in the 8th with a 5 run lead to get across the mountains because work came early Monday and listening to a couple innings of disaster on the radio, something like 17-15 or in that neighborhood. Not every, but most Sunday games were high scoring affairs.

My only point is look out, this staff is only getting better! TJ really does recover over a 10-14 month period...depending. Like any other ligament injury (ACL, MCL etc) it is the mental part of recovery that takes more time. Many times another part of the body (muscle or other) is injured from non-use or improper use over the course of the 1st year coming back...at least in my (family) experience.
