Friday was full of controversy but how about Cadyn's bunt where he was called out for "runners interference" as the throw hit him in the back resulted in him being safe at first and advancing the runner (I believe Jack Anderson) from 1st to 2nd.
Now, I totally get Cadyn being called out if he wasn't using the batters running lane. That extra set of lines in foul ground on the 1st base side. From my seat, I couldn't tell exactly where he was at on the field... but my issues were the following.
The home plate umpire made the call, is that his call to make?
I was also puzzled when they made our runner return to 1st base. That didn't seem right. So, I went home and looked up the rule and from what I'm reading that was the right call, only in this situation though... when the batter runner is causing interference with the play at first base.
I guess I don't get the logic....
Can you rules experts clarify? Anyone on the message board here see where Cadyn's feet were as he was running to first?
If we did get our runner to second with this out, I believe we would have scored and ended the game earlier then the bottom of 16. I'm guessing we were somewhere around inning 13 of 14....
Baseball is a crazy game of very detailed rules and I'd never seen this one called the way it was and I may need to apologize to Mr. Home plate for what I screamed for the next 5 minutes.

I wanted Cadyn to be safe. I saw the replay. He seemed clearly to me to be outside of the running path. I believe it was a correct call, and the runner has to be returned to the base. And, yes, the home plate ump has the best angle to make the call

Totally agree, if there is no interference the runner would not have advanced...RIGHT? It's really not a judgement call. The interference causes the play other than the runner/batters to return to the base they were occupying prior to that interference.

Ball dead, runners return to where they were at time of pitch.

Actually not so fast on the other runner.
The rule specifically says if they reach the next base before the interference, they stay at the advanced base. If they haven't reached the next base it is the umpires judgement... EXCEPT when the batter/runner interferes with the play at first (as Cadyn was called for). Then all runners go back no matter what.
That is the part that is illogical to me. If Cadyn was in the proper running lane, he would have successfully sacrificed the runner from 1st to 2nd. Bringing that runner back fubared the entire inning and made the out useless. I think by rule it was the right call, I just don't get why they have that exception other than to discourage what Cadyn did or make it easier on the umpires to not have to track progress and make another judgement call.
Hopefully lesson learned, run in your lane young man....
