I became a Beaver baseball fan about 6 years ago, go to several games a year (UC Davis and Arizona games so far this year), watch all the streamed games at home and the PAC 12 Network games at the Alibi in West Salem (local watering hole).
I have a thought about the game that may not be framed correctly and may not be correct, but am throwing it out to you all for clarification. To me, it sometimes seems like playing baseball is as much about playing against the game as it is against the other team. You compete against another team but what you’re really trying to do is play perfectly against the game; in this respect, the opposing players just represent the obstacles that need to be overcome to win the game.
In football, you block, tackle, run – lots of physical contact and winning/losing in individual plays that result in winning/losing the game. The same can be said for basketball, soccer and others. In baseball, you also play to win but the competition takes different forms. You hit through a gap, tag a base, catch a fly ball, make a home run... Make these plays and you win; don’t make them and you lose. It seems like the closest baseball gets to competing like the sports above is the pitcher – catcher duel. Are any of these thoughts accurate?
And the game is so cerebral, and so strategic! Sometimes it seems like a chess match on steroids. On top of being great athletically, players and coaches have to be prepared for a myriad of different situations that could arise.
Maybe what I’m trying to say is that playing the game is more than playing against another team. It is truly playing against the perfect game, perhaps like trying to bowl a 300 game?
Just random thoughts, but I’d appreciate hearing what you guys have to say. I absolutely love watching our guys compete! In virtually every aspect of the game, they are like a well oiled machine.
Thanks a bunch, and go Beavs!
