Currently there are 2 OSU WBB players with banners in Gill. Carol Menken and Felicia Ragland.
While I'm not a big fan of retiring numbers, the accomplishments of Wiese, Weisner and Hamblin certainly merit discussion of some equivalent recognition.

Like you individual banners need to be very very special performers. Their teams were special and duly recognized. But, you can't put up banners of every team member from elite teams or the hanging of said banners loses significance. IMHO... honor the teams with another type or leave as is.

I'm not sure about retiring numbers....
But I do think the fact that Ruth holds the Pac-12 block record and Sydney the Pac-12 3 pointers made record might be banner worthy. I don't know how many other Pac-12 records our players hold, perhaps we could have banners for that? And I suspect both of those marks are going to hold up for a while.
Go Beavs!

Slow down there, pardner. Let the dust settle a bit. Ask again in 5-10 years.

I think you strike while the iron is hot. At least get a banner up for Sydney. I thought Ruth and Jamie could've been up there, but Sydney definitely deserves a banner. Not sure we retire a number, but her banner is a must!

I'll let ya'll argue the (worthy) merits of Ruth and Jamie, but.....there has NEVER been a better ambassador, nor more worthy student athlete than Sydney. Ever. In any sport. Retire the number!

What do you think of Dave Twardzik having a banner in Moda? I think it's kind of funny. SaveSave

It can make one look needy for recognition or an attempt at promoting 'the brand'. I agree that finding a way to honor valuable assets is a good thing though.

If we didn't retire Ken Simonton, I don't think we can retire Sydney Wiese.
Simonton: 1st team all conference, 2nd team all american, led team to first major bowl appearance in 40 years, Pac-12 career leader in rushing touchdowns Wiese: All conference 3X (basketball picks 15 players, doesn't differentiate teams), 2nd team all american, led team to only final 4, Pac-12 career leader in 3 pointers.

I don't think any football players have banners in Gill. Not even Terry Baker. So I'm not comparing her against FB players but rather the other MBB, WBB and Wrestling athlete banners currently hanging in Gill.

Fair enough, Werebeaver - I'd say she ranks ahead of Felicia Ragland. I'm not old enough to remember Carol Menken, but she competed in the Olympics, and that lets me know she was pretty special. As far as the men's retired numbers, Payton's the only one from my era that I can comment on, and I'd say he's worthy. Gymnastics and wrestling are pretty foreign terrain for me, so I won't comment.
