Great year for the women. Congratulations to all on a superb effort.
Please enlighten me on how our prospects look for next year. It appears that we might be in for a down period, but I do not want to underestimate Coach Rueck.
Questions that I have include (a) Can Katie Mac be an effective scorer (b) Same question about Taylor and Kat. (b) Who will be our other bigs if both Brea and Kolbe are gone.(c)Who will be the point guard? (d) It appears Oregon seems to be out recruiting us at this point-is this correct or just hype by the Ducks.
I believe 100% in Coach Rueck's philosophy of defense and rebounding being the key to steady consistent success. That being said our offense this year was very weak at times.
Look forward to comments, observations, from my fellow Beaver fans.
Thank you!

Thank you! Also anyone care to rank the Pac-12 teams for next year? UCLA looks number one

(a) She's 6'2", can handle the ball and shoot from outside. I think she'll score plenty with Syd out of her way. (b) Taylor has been called "Baby J" for the similarities between her game and Ms. Weisner's. Kat is a phenomenal shot who also plays good D and thus will see the floor plenty. (b) Tara Corodale is 6'3" and a 5-star recruit. Maddie is just 6'2" but has played mostly as a big. Joanna Grymek is coming in a 6'6" or 6'7", but will probably be a 10 or 20-minute player at first. (c) Probably Katie - she has the most experience in the position. (d) There is a lot of hype about these girls coming from Europe, but it's not like Scott is sitting still. This coming year has a 5-star, a 4-star, and the #2 Juco recruit coming in. It's early to talk much about 2019, but we just got a commit from a 6'9" girl who might turn out to be truly special. I can't find any commits for the Ducks for 2018 yet.
As for next year, my list is:
The Favorites: UCLA, UO The Contenders: Stanford, OSU Could be Really Good: ASU, Cal, Colorado Just Pretty Good: UW, WSU, USC, AZ, Utah

Don't forget Mikayla Pivec. All around good player. MB. Her athleticism, and (so far only a sneak preview) leadership could be huge for the next 3 years. She has the "it".

Is Coach Rueck still looking to add to this years class? If Breanna leaves, and we don't add another player, we go into next year with just 11 players. Seems a little low number wise to me.

The problem is that - other than Bre - we only have one junior this year (Marie). We have 7 freshmen and sophomores, and three recruits coming in for 2017-2018. That leaves just three slots for 2018-2019, of which we have two spoken for (that we know of), Mayhue and Aquino.
I could see Scott taking in a senior transfer to replace Bre, but if he is going to give up a slot for 2018 for a four-year recruit or a Juco, it would have to be for someone special.
(How crazy is recruiting? Scott found Mayhue as a sophomore playing in Wyoming. What a gamble - offering a 15-year-old girl playing small-town ball, projecting that she'll be a Pac-12-ready player three years later!)

Thanks to Title IX, *Womens* BB has a 15 scholarship limit, not 13 like the men. So Scott can take another recruit and still have two slots for 2018-2019. And, or course, if Bre does leave, he could take a senior transfer to replace her without impacting the following year.

Coach Rueck seems to not be in rush to use up all his scholarships......some form of quality control? Making sure he holds to a standard? Easier to manage and give minutes to fewer players? (I doubt the last, but I am intrigued by the fact I don't think we have ever in the SR era been at 15 scholarship players). Next year: Mikayla Pivec, PG ***** - need her driving and slashing. And her quiet leadership (need it to get less quiet) since she will likely be on the floor a lot. Driving the baseline (likely a go-to move in HS) can have mixed results in the Pac-12. She won the national 3 point competition a year ago, need her to hit from the outside with that kind of consistency.... Taya Corosdale, F ***** - I am hoping she is an instant double-double machine, I suspect she will get some serious minutes..... Katie McWilliams, G ***** - we need the Katie Mac that scored 29 in the season opener, not the more tentative version we got in other games...... Aleah Goodman, PG **** - Kelly Sopak claims she was the steal of the recruiting class. Saw some good moves, ball handling and a sweet midrange jumper from her state championship video.....will she be our version of Ionescu (whom she succeeded on her AAU team)? Madison Washington, W **** - has the motor, and something good has happened every time she has seen the court....... Katharine Tudor, G **** - hit that freshman plateau late in the season.....hope she can come back with consistency in her soph season Janessa Thropay, F *** - an unknown at this point - but hope her athleticism can give us some good minutes (she was getting D-1 volleyball offers) Taylor Kalmer, PG *** - "instant offense", not utilized heavily this season. Can she take the next step and consistently be that 15 point scorer (her BYU game) Tarea Green, P *** - will likely get more minutes, hopefully two years dealing with Ruth, Marie and Bre has her ready Marie Gulich, P ? - can she continue to be on the trajectory she has been on thus far? If so, we should have a 15-10 player on our hands. Bre Brown, P - one more year, please! Scoring and shot blocking presence.... Joanna Grymek - hope she can come in and continue to shoot 60%, as well as return us to a Ruth type interior presence....at least for a quarter or two.... That is the 11-12 players we have right now..... We will definitely learn which players are ready to make the Kolbie leap next year, I suspect most will get their shot. Go Beavs! *Edit - added the *not* to first sentence

That's an extremely optimistic review haha!!!! I agree, blueheron.....but right now we are undefeated on next season!! :-) I can dream, can't I? More seriously, Scott Rueck will have a bunch of 5 and 4 star players (3+ of each!) next year. I have seen other teams completely transformed with the addition of just one or two such players.......problem is that success for us now has quite a high bar and we are in a very tough conference. tsdtr actually had a worse conference record this year than last, but they would likely consider their season successful. Ours was also dramatically successful, but we could taste the Final 8/4 in our grasp and now that we have been there..... We have used a very Ralph Miller-esque approach to using the bench (i.e. give your starters short breathers), but what happens when your bench does not represent much if any of a drop off? That is the scenario I squinted and imagined above.......what might truly make the review optimistic is whether we will insist on "riding the hot hand" even when it cools off (our last several games) or whether we will have discovered and developed the deeper bench capabilities..... Geez.....already looking forward to next season..... Go Beavs!

I do not believe Rueck has ever used more than 12 scholarships in a season (he may have topped out at 13 briefly). Leaving some scholarships unfilled is normal with Rueck and it does not effect anything as far as the success he has as a coach. I have learned with Rueck this is absolutely nothing to worry about. In the stat line and footage I have seen of Goodman she very well may soon be our best option to be the defensive stopper role like Hanson. Any game I followed she was the primary defender on the other teams main scorer and the stats show that she has excelled at this role.
