Madrigal is so deserving. By June 2018 I think Beaver fans will be able to look back in awe at just what it was that Pat Casey brought in to the mid-infield positions with the incoming Freshman class in the fall of 2015. Madrigal and Grenier, both passing up MLB Opportunities & then both torching the WCL summer league, just a few weeks out of high school, in the summer of '15, playing against 97% college players. Madrigal hasn't missed a beat since then and Grenier, though slower to heat up at the plate, had been a defensive (++) since day one as a Beaver. Whichever plays SS, and whichever plays 2B, I believe they'll go down in Beaver lore as (at least) on par with Barney - Wong....or any other past duo. Sure fun to be a Beaver baseball fan in 2017.

Not unless a NC is in there. There is no substitute for greatness that also is part of winning the biggest prize.

I don't follow the Beavs, or watch the games, with a mindset that falling short of a National Championship is any kind of a failure. For me it's a matter of the pure enjoyment of watching young talent develop and express itself on the field in amazing ways - and this young season has already provided loads of that. I'm a fan. If I were a member of the team I might feel differently.

Perfect Game 2015 All American Shortstops: 1st team- Cadyn Grenier 2nd team - Nick Madrigal Honorable mention: Bryce Fehmel Now, these lists include multiple but players at each position, but to have that kind of infield talent in one recruiting class is outstanding. And that they didn't take the opportunity at professional baseball is difference between being #1 and #6 in the conference.

But,, if you are going to compare great players at a school who will go down in the "lore" of a program... those who are of equal or better talent and have won at the highest level are typically seen as better players. Especially when the comparison is of those just beginning their careers. Just my take...

The fact that Wongs double play 'turn' or Darwin's relay to home to snuff a bewildered base runner, that these plays live on, has everything to do with their setting (WINNING a National Championship). Still, I deeply enjoy the artistry of our current DP combination, regardless of how it all plays out in June.
