Since I don't watch a lot of the games I'm wondering if the girls ever play a zone so Maria doesn't have to defend the perimeter?

The answer is "Yes". OSU does play zone when they face teams that have difficulty with shooting from beyond the arc. Also, the Beavs will mix in intermittent zone schemes to give their opponents a different look at times throughout the games.
I did see Marie Gulich trying to guard smaller and quicker players in the 5'10"-6'0" height range out on the perimeter on Sunday against Creighton, so I understand why you might ask that question.
We have seen OSU play more man-to-man defense in the NCAA tourney as the coaching staff's scouting plans have tried to limit the two opponents with shorter rosters, Long Beach State and Creighton, from having success shooting from the perimeter. However, you probably saw more zone against Long Beach State on Friday than the Beavs used against Creighton on Sunday. Didn't work so well against Long Beach State on Friday as the opponents shot 10/18 (56%) from distance. On Sunday, the tighter man-to-man defense by the Beavs contributed to Creighton's 2/10 performance from beyond the arc.

It's hard to match up against smaller teams in a man to man for our inside game, but you want Gabby on the pivot player for the other team's offense. I think that the OSU/FSU is going to be the best matchup of the Sweet 16 and we are going to have to give them several different looks; it might come down to the last possession.

Sorry for my ignorance but do we ever go box and 1 or triangle and 2?
