during mid week between beaver series in surprise I went over to phoenix muni and watched the devils play against ok state. while one game does not a season make I got a feel for their club. first of all they lost 18-4. they used 9 pitcher and gave 15 earned runs on 22 hits and 7 walks. not only didn't they throw strikes, their stuff was not that good. one guy way able to touch 90. shortstop booted a couple balls, there were another couple "errors" not charged. didn't turn a routine double play and an outfielder threw to the wrong base. they look really young, not the body type you usually see at asu. they were overmatched at the plate by a guy who would be a solid #2 starter in the pac 12. I think it looks like a rebuilding year in tempe with a lots of young player. again its was only one game but from watching the beavers play I would say we are head and shoulder above that team. beavers play like they can I think we can sweep this weekend.

Didn't they beat Long Beach last weekend? Was that a sweep? Maybe they are young and the light switch isn't always on

Starting all games this season for ASU, at 2B, is true freshman Carter Aldrete. He Played in 2016 for Bend Elks. I attended about 15 games. He Shared infield play (incl 2B) with George Mendezona - both being that semi-rare recent HS graduate that gets to spend the summer facing collegiate players. I was much more impressed with Mendezona who had an advanced presence at the plate. Both had a few problems as infielders. A lot has happened since then (I.e. Fall ball, and college level coaching)....Even considering that, It's unthinkable that a player with Aldrete's skill level would be an everyday starter for the Beavs at a middle infield position. Elks by the way have had a number of wonderful Beaver infielders over the years: Tyler Smith, Joey Wong, Chris Kunda and Cadyn Grenier. Of the bunch, the two that most frequently made my jaw drop with defensive gems were Wong and Grenier
