Hopefully Wong and Tyler Smith aren't competing for the same spot at AAA.

Wong is old enough now that he's no longer a "prospect".
He's pretty much "organizational filler" at this point in his career. A good guy to have on your team, someone who will "play the game the right way", but unlikely to ever be on an MLB roster.
Smith at least still has some prospect cache and a slim chance of making the bigs (although, he is a month OLDER than Mike Trout, for perspective).

With or without reaching MLB, a path like Joey Wongs has far more upside than choosing Single A right out of high school (riding buses and eating Wendy's alongside of 25 other non-college 18 year olds). Getting an education, flying airliners to away games, hanging out with a crowd that's at least 50% female, playing baseball in an elite conference, then spending your early twenties playing minor league ball, before settling into your "real" career by age 27 or so, with a degree. Wong's double play in Omaha will live on forever. How many plays by 19 or 20 year olds in A or even AAA achieve immortality? Go Joey Wong !

I wouldn't be surprised if Tyler is on the M's roster. He's hitting over .300, leads the team in RBI's for spring. He's played in every game. He and Danny Hayes got a really good chance of being on their teams rosters opening day.

He and Danny Hayes got a really good chance of being on their teams rosters opening day. I am not familiar enough with the M's or the White Sox rosters to make any predictions on these guys chances to make the big club. My guess is it is slim to none for opening day, and their best chance is to play their asses off in AAA and get a call up as an injury replacement or September call-up. Neither Smith or Hayes are currently on the 40-man roster, so either team would have to be willing to cut a man on the 40-man (or have someone they want to move to the 60-day DL) to add Hayes or Smith to the roster. Then it comes down to the fact that most MLB teams have only 6 infielders on the active roster, 4 starters and one middle infield back-up, and one corner infield back-up. Smith or Hayes could hit .500 in spring, but if the big club has 4 entrenched starters and one established back-up for their position, they are playing at AAA this year.

MLB.com reporting that the mariners have waived mike freeman and the infield utility spot is down to Shawn O'Malley and Taylor Motter. baseball can be a cruel game. hunter pence hit .625 one spring training and did not make the big league club. GO SMITTY !
