linkIt's in crappy slideshow format, but the gist of the thing was that there really isn't any difference yet. Said to expect this class to finish somewhere in the 35-45 range. What's amazing to me is how dependent these rankings are on size of the class. One year, Riley's class averaged over 3 stars, but finished 44th in the country because we only signed 18. This is why I fear people will be thrilled with a mid 30's recruting class this season, which may be artificially inflated by the large number of signees.

I liked looking back. Interesting that most(above 50%) of our 4 or 5 guys that upped the class did not qualify or workout. Looks like Andersen this year has higher star ave. Saw Summer Houston was a 2 star he is going to be big time after a year with weights.

It's because the system was created by car dealers. "We lose money on every recruit, but we make it up in volume!"

This is why I fear people will be thrilled with a mid 30's recruting class this season, which may be artificially inflated by the large number of signees. Couple of things to look at. 1) There was an article I believe two weeks ago in the Oregonian talking about recruiting rankings and stars. It mentioned that if a player who has not been evaluated yet, accepts a Power 5 offer. They will in most cases immediately bump them up to a 2 or 3*, just because they received a Power 5 offer. I know GA has a couple of those. Riley, it seemed lived off the those guys. Which in turn bumped up our average star rankings. 2) If you look solely at rankings, yes this class GA has put together isn't 20-40 spots higher than what Riley did on average, if you go just of avg star rating and class ranking. However, if you compare the number of recruits in our current class who have multiple other Power5 offers vs the kids Riley brought in. We are recruiting kids who other schools want. We are beating out Utah, Arizona, ASU, etc for a lot of these kids. Where, with Riley we would beat out Utah St, Webber, Northern AZ, etc. for a lot of guys.
Also, Riley made it well known that he and his staff at OSU didn't spend a lot of time going after 4-5* kids because they didn't feel they could get them to come. They would offer, but never seriously pursued, unless there was interest from the kid. Riley preferred kids who were not yet developed yet, and need to grow and mature and be ready to compete as Jr/Sr (which was IMO part of problem this year, the kids we had were simply not ready physically to play Pac12 football). Where is GA and Staff are going after 4-5* kids, and not only are the kids interested, they are taking visits. Coming to Corvallis and saying good things about OSU and the staff. I believe in Riley's 12 years we had one Top 300 player. This year we have two. IMO, once we get VFC complete, and get back to filling Reser and winning games I believe GA will be able to sell more higher rated recruits on OSU/Corvallis than Riley did.
So when people point out just based on numbers that GA isn't recruiting that much better than Riley, I believe when you dig a little deeper and also look the number of higher star kids they are getting to visit. Its pretty obvious GA is doing a better job than Riley did.
At the end of the day though, these kids need to get into school and produce on the field and that remains to be seen for GA recruits, but I like what I've seen thus far.

You know unless the whole diversity thing gets us. Damn that pisses me off. Makes Corvallis sound like an unwelcoming place when in reality it is probably the most welcoming college town in the Pac 12.

The pseudo-liberals in town have convinced themselves that they believe in diversity. They go through "liberal" motions. But it's all show. They ban plastic bags because it's a visible (yet, worthless) commitment to sustainability; they verbalize their commitment to the students. But how many have been appointed to city boards and commissions; they verbalize their commitment to the ADA. But continue to permit development that doesn't comply with the ADA standards; they celebrate racial equality. But only on the sports teams. I had classes with a number of the black football players. They didn't feel welcomed and several stressed that there were areas in Linn and Benton counties they would not go at night, especially alone. It isn't nearly as welcoming as you want to believe it is.

It isn't nearly as welcoming as you want to believe it is. reminds me of the former african american lineman coach who I talked to once and he told me the corvallis PD pulled him over for some minor traffic violation but when they approached his car they had their pistol drawn on him!! That has been over 10 years ago now though, but it kind of paints a picture of how the community "welcomes" some folks based on skin color

I think that's a little harsh. Riley was in on a lot of top talent, even to the point of the final 2-3 on some very big names. I don't recall him ever saying he preferred to develop talent. He did say he moved on once a kid said he wasn't interested... I've never heard Andersen say he prefers to keep on kids who've said they aren't interested.
I looked it up last year during one of these type threads, OSU offered 60 some odd 4 and 5 star kids, all but a few of them on Riley's watch. That doesn't sound like ignoring high star talent to me. It'll be interesting to see how many Andersen offers this recruiting cycle.

maybe the real test will be how many WTF head scratchers are given schollies with GA, with Riley there were a bunch of them IMHO it was crazy.
