Writers got that one wrong.
Coaches got it right.

I heard the pac 12 wonks on the broadcast say something about that. It went by so fast I was like...WUT? Wasn't Gabbie DPOTY? But I usually take anything they say with a grain of skeptism. So I just figured they had it wrong

So I just figured they had it wrong There were two polls for post season PAC-12 honors. Official PAC-12 honors, as voted by the coaches and a media version voted on by the WBB beat writers.

Canada is a sensational player and a great defender. At the same time, Gabby's defense was the game changer last night in a more than obvious manner. Kelsey Plum, Canada, and the other great scorers in the Pac12 have Gabby nightmares.

Kelsey Plum, Canada, and the other great scorers in the Pac12 have Gabby nightmares. You know I watch her and I'm not really sure how she does it. No spectacular blocks...or steals....or charges. Just really good positioning. She moves well, sliding her feet. Always in the way. It can almost be un noticed. Until her opponent scores 13 (?) in the quarter when she is sitting on the bench

Jordin: 2.52 steals per game, #1 in conference. Gabby: 1.35 steals per game, not in the top 15.
Your typical media voter covers one team all season. They see their girls 30 times, and every other girl twice. You can't make a good decision based on two games, so they go back to the stats. And Jordin has the stats.
The coaches have seen hours of film of every player. The coaches stay awake at night scheming, "We'll do this against Jordin. We'll do this against Gabby." My bet it was a close vote - Jordin is an awesome player - but clearly Gabby gave the coaches more to think about.
And, to be honest, there may have been one or two coaches who said to themselves, "She's a senior and she hasn't received anything like the accolades she deserves. I hope that my players will be inspired to think like Gabby."

And, D is Gabby's calling card so no brainer you go with her for D POY. Writers don't live day in and day out with players and care about the intricacies of awards and what they mean to some players.
