Here's the pertinent information: Luke gave incoming head coach Gary Andersen a chance in spring practices to show what type of offense he wanted to install. When Luke realized he was not as suited for the Andersen offense he began looking for a new home and found Doug Nussmeier again. In April Luke decided to seek a new coach and offense. Rumors that Del Rio would come to Florida to be with offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier began to circulate. Not only did Florida have his former Alabama OC, in Nussmeier, but McElwain had hired Del Rio’s Oregon State OC, John Garrett, as an offensive quality control specialist. (It would be hard pressed for any freshman to know the offense more than Del Rio next season.) Although many people choose to believe (and keep repeating the misinformation) that he was "run off" - he wasn't. I think you missed the first part, "When Luke realized he was not as suited for the Andersen offense..." So yes, he was told he wasn't going to be in the mix. Nussmeier from Lake Oswego is fine, but John Garrett is garbage. |

When Spring practice started, they gave all 7 QBs a shot. Midway through Spring, they made a big deal out of narrowing the field down to the top 3. They publically announced they chose Collins, Mitchell, and McMaryion to get most of the reps from then on.
All Andersen had to do was keep Del Rio in the top 3, and he'd probably still be here. You didn't even have to make him #1, just give him a shot to battle.
No, instead they gave preference to 3 QBs who can't throw a damn football, and paved the way for our most experienced and best passer to walk.
Worst mistake of this coaching staff, by far....

I think you missed the first part, "When Luke realized he was not as suited for the Andersen offense..." So yes, he was told he wasn't going to be in the mix. Nussmeier from Lake Oswego is fine, but John Garrett is garbage. No. I didn't "miss" anything. He wasn't a good fit and moved on just like he'd moved on previously. Exactly, he was told his services weren't needed. |

GO BEAVS! I'll take those three over Del Rio IMO. All three QB's (and now down to two with Mitchell gone) now have experience for 2016. Who knows if Garretson will make it through the entire year unscathed (assuming he's the starter)? It is what it is and Del Rio is back in SEC territory. Would have thought he might have followed Riley to Nebraska but even that wasn't a go. |

GO BEAVS! Not doing the research because I don't care that much. But I believe it was narrowed to those three AFTER Del Rio left. I believe Del Rio was #2 when he opted to leave...on his own.
Edit...I did the research: Del Rio "During Saturday's scrimmage work, Del Rio and Collins shared first-team reps. Mitchell and Collins then ran with the first team Tuesday, while Del Rio earned notably fewer snaps -- all with the second team." Luke was getting 1st and 2nd team reps. But his skill set wasn't a fit for the offense. So he left. I don't think its fair to say the staff forced him out...

Seems to me our talent was much closer to that then what we ended up with. But, I am sure there is a master plan here. |

He could have kept Del Rio, and ran an offense that better fit the talent we had. But with our defense, even if we had a good offense. At best we win 2 more games this year. Is 4-8 that much better than 2-10? IMO in the long run no. I believe GA knew this year wasn't going to a winning season with the talent we had, so he took a chance on Collins. It didn't work out. But, I think OSU better positioned long term because of it. The players we have are now used to offense and those that it doesn't fit will choose to leave. Freeing up space for GA to bring in guys that fit his systems and his coaching style. He's getting his guys in sooner and will be able to run his system sooner. And I think that probably is his master plan. |

Ok, I stand corrected. Turns out that Del Rio was named #3 behind Collins and Mitchell, who at the time Andersen referred to "1A" and "1B" after the first half of spring. With Del Rio leaving, that moved McMaryion up to the #3 QB.

Still, my point stands: If he is named as either "1A" or "1B", he's not so tempted to move on.
I could also be wrong about his abilities, but I don't see how anybody could be less accurate or a worse thrower than Collins or Mitchell. Who knows, maybe he'll totally stink it up at Florida.
