Here's an interesting stat: In points scored per minute, Taylor Kalmer is 3rd, behind #1 Syd, #2 Bre. Other important stats: In minutes played, Taylor Kalmer is 9th. In TO's/minute she is tied with Syd for worst on the team (correction: excluding Maddie Washington and Janessa Thropay). I expect Syd to be high due to the extra attention she gets from the defense. [Additional facts: She is 3rd on the team in Assists/minute. And she shoots 87% from the FT line!] Is it her defense keeping her off the floor? Looking at her last 6 minute stint, she did get scored on twice as the result of not getting around a screen. Is she not participating in the offense as she should (trying too often to create her own shot)? Is it the TO's? She had no TO's against CO, so it doesn't seem to be the reason her time was limited. Playing her more would seem to be one answer for improving our offensive production. Link to the numbers

So, who do you bench?

If I played her, I would give her more time in place of Pivec, who, while doing well, has been inconsistent on offense. The purpose of my post, however, was to see what others thought about the reasons behind her not playing. I know Rueck must have a good reason.

Nor do I presume to second guess Scott Rueck. However, one of the things that is fun about sports is to speculate, second guess, etc.
The Lady Beavs have so far exceeded expectations this year, it is truly amazing.
That being said, I believe that if they have any chance of winning more than one game or so in the NCAA tournament, they must get some more dynamic offense (i.e. more points)from somewhere.
They miss Jamie Weisner so so much. I thought perhaps Katie Mac would fill the void or perhaps a combination of Katie Mac, Kat Tudor, and Taylor. Has not happened, and Taylor really has not been given the opportunity.
Seems like every win is a grind it out close win, where the Beavs win in spite of (a)many turnovers (b)poor free throw shooting and (c) an offense that is fortunate to score 60 points.
Again, let me close by saying I believe the accomplishments of this year's team given the players they lost by graduation, is incredible.

Playing good defense will get Kalmer more court time in my opinion. She can score but the player she was guarding suddenly got open looks during her spell. McWilliams seems to be improving on defense as she blocked a potential game tying three pointer against Colorado. Defensive play is the calling card of this team.

You are 100% correct that defensive play is the "calling card" of all Scott Rueck teams. In my opinion that is the reason they are consistent winners.
But I also strongly believe that to win tournament games this year, they must be more explosive offensively.

I think you are probably right that defense is Kalmer's key weakness. It would be best is McWilliams picked up her scoring. Not only is she a good defender, her turnover rate is very low compared to the other players.

My friend and I have been speculating all season about Kalmer and her lack of playing time. At times she has great court vision and is very aggressive offensively and delivers one of the best post entry passes on the team but is TO prone. I do recall someone having the strong opinion on this message board that she should be starting at point guard last season. I have been paying attention to her ever since to make my own assessment. I think that is settled at this point haha. I have come to the same conclusion (especially after the CO game) as other previous posts that it must be defense and that as fans we get to see very small glimpses of of the entire picture so therefore rely on the the judgement of a top notch coaching staff who do get the entire picture. I hope that she sticks with it and continues to develop as there will be plenty of playing time to go around next year and she has some intriguing skills. At times she plays scared of being pulled (which is valid - catch 22) and just needs some slack to develop further with her in-game play.
