...We haven't done well with teams pressing and playing tight defense all season. USC did it the entire game and it paid off for them. Note to other teams: Here's how to beat the Beavers.
...USC looked like a bunch of schoolyard ratball players most of the game, then couldn't understand when they got called for fouls. Not that we did any good with the subsequent free throws.
...When a couple USC players were making "sweep the floor with you" motions in the second quarter I really wanted us to crush them.
... Now, I'm not good at math, but... If we have three players in the back court and they have four there pressing us, doesn't that give us an advantage under the basket if we get the ball past the trap? Instead we, on the occasion we actually get through the trap, wait to set up and run our offense.
...We make a lot of passes that don't seem to have any 'zip' to them. Too many of those get the defenders' hands on them. Lazy, lackadaisical passes. Let's put a little oomph behind those passes!
...How can we be so ineffective at inbounding the ball? That, and dealing with a full court press, are both pretty basic things that we seem to struggle mightily with.
...UCLA worried me. A lot. USC didn't. I was looking forward to seeing some players we don't see much. WOW, was I wrong. Now UCLA REALLY worries me.
...I don't think the PAC is over-rated. I don't think this team is playing above their talent level. I think the PAC is becoming more competitive top to bottom. The worst teams are closing the gap between them and the best teams. That's going to continue to make life tougher for the best teams in the future.
...If we can regroup and beat the Bruins tomorrow, I think we can finish on top of the PAC. Depending on who we draw in Seattle, we have a good shot at winning there as well. If we manage to host the first two rounds of the tourney, and have competition the caliber of the teams that came to Gill last year, we will advance. After that, all bets are off.
...I have to go get busy now. There's a lot more work involved in being retired than you'd imagine. Fingers crossed that I get to sneak out to the shop for a bit today.
