Look recruiting from a coaches point of view; how would you like your livelihood, and future depending on the whims of 17 and 18 year olds. Not me fore sure.

If you're guaranteed $10-12m mil no matter what they decide I'd bet you'd change your tune!
Failing can be bad for the ego, but essentially one of the biggest responsibilities in life is taken care of... your family.
So it all comes with the territory and they are well compensated for it.

That may be true for the HC but, I think it's a bit different for the assistants. I'm not an expert on the process but I think it's mainly the asst. that goes out and beats the bushes and has to sweet talk the young and sometimes "Brash" youngsters. I guess the secret is to be the head guy. I've seen some assistants that have been humiliated by Head coaches that are a bit temperamental. I watched the guy from Colorado grab a young assistant by the stacking swivel and almost put him on his back for being to close to the field of play while the HC himself was much further out. WTF could the assistant do? Nothing, if he wanted to keep his job. I know assistants get a pretty good check too but, how would you like to have Nicky from Alabama take his frustration out on you in front of your family and a few million people. I for sure do not feel sorry for Lane Kifffin but, that guy had to swallow a bunch of chit from Nicky. There's a big upside to being in a big D-1 program I'm sure, and even if by some miracle I was qualified, I'd pass up the big bucks and watch from the stands. Your future is in the hands of young egotistical kids and, old egotistical Head Coaches. Tough racket, and a tough way to make a living.

These coaches know they're each going to meet with dozens of kids to get their 2-5 recruits. In that respect recruiting would be a lot like any outside sales job. Assuming they like working with kids it's probably interesting and even fun. If they don't like working with kids they're probably in the wrong profession.
I'd think the biggest drag would be the travel, time away from home and family, and essentially being continuously working for long stretches. Some might thrive off that, some probably dont. At this level even the lower paid assistants make a healthy 6 figure income basically guaranteed year to year, not too many other sales jobs do that.

It's a path they all chose to take... many hoping to become one of those "old egotistical Head Coaches". Been in that racket and like the rest of us you can pick your life and lifestyle. I'm only going by your moniker, but I'm guessing it's nothing compared to the decisions of young egotistical kids and those "head coaches" coming through the service and serving your country. Lot less pay, much higher stakes... and for the most honorable cause there is!
