Ever since Gill Coliseum opened in 1949 it has had a loudspeaker array suspended above center court.
1949
2014
But now the speakers have been repositioned in 4 separated groups and 1 subwoofer stack pushed high up above the lights, below the roof ridge.
Too all appearances, it looks like they are making way for a center hung scoreboard/video screen. Relocating the fabric banners will be a formality. I really hope it happens - it will help bring Gill into the 21st century and greatly enhance the spectator experience.
Can't happen soon enough. It will only enhance everything that's already great about Gill. Make way for the future.

1949 was a vintage year.

Must have been quite a move from tiny Men's Gym/Langton Hall, to the massive new 10,000 seat OSC Coliseum.

When I read about the new sound system, my biggest fear was that they were going to pipe more music in at the expense of the pep band. One of the best things about college games (basketball or football) is the band. I can't stand to venues that try to make a college event feel like the NBA (e.g., the Galen center). Let's hope they keep the pep band a big part of the experience.

Can anyone who has been to Gill of late report on the quality of the new sound system? I can't really tell from TV whether we have lost the "teacher from Peanuts" muddled sound.....
Go Beavs!

The sound seemed more clear and less muddled and also a bit louder. I can also say that it did not have a big impact for me as far as a game experience.
It was nice to not have that big glob in the sight lines to the murals on the far wall. Of course if they put up a big video board then that would again restrict that view. Plus and minus if they happen to do that but nothing I could not live with.

Must have been quite a move from tiny Men's Gym/Langton Hall, to the massive new 10,000 seat OSC Coliseum. I can remember having my one and only basketball PE class at Langton Hall. For all these years I thought it was Langston Hall but I see you are correct that there was no "s" in Langton........I just learned something new today!
Was only 3 months old when they first opened the doors of Gill.

The sound is clearer. As for the volume, the staff was clearly having some problems "recalibrating" - there were some times early in the day when the music or PA came on way too loud and they quickly dialed it back. I suspect that the new speakers are capable of much more than the old ones were.
