OSU: Rivals: 28 (21 commits) Scout: 49 (they have us at 18 commits) 24/7: 38 (21 commits)
I'm pretty curious at the differences, because they weren't that vast for another program of interest for Beaver fans:
Wisconsin: Rivals: 27 Scout: 26 24/7: 25
FWIW, Andersen's last full recruiting class (2014) at Wisconsin was ranked 33/29/33.

Just checked again....we're now 30th in the Rivals ranking, with an average star rating of 2.82. In 2013, our average star rating was 2.92 and we were ranked 39th. Those 2013 guys are the ones playing now (Villamin, Bolden, Peko, Haskins, Jarmon, Hautau, Harlow).
I will admit that in 2013, we were coming of a 9-4 year with an Alamo Bowl appearance, so it's a little apples to oranges. Andersen's bringing in similar talent coming off a 2-10 year (yes, I've already chalked up the Civil War as a loss. So have you.) Our 2012 class, coming off a 3-9 season which included a 35-0 waxing at Wisconsin and that loss to Sac. St? Ranked 39th with a 2.87 average star rating.
So I'll ask again: Why is Andersen seen as this great recruiter? What is the basis for that? I'm not trying to hate on the guy, I think he's doing a pretty good job recruiting with what he's got to work with. But how is this a significant step up from Riley? Because we put guys faces on a Star Wars poster?

It may be the Stars are similar, but to me, it seems like most of the guys who have committed have more interest from other schools rather than 2 & 3 star under the radar guys. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems that way.

I agree with the 'more interest' comment. Additionally, we are seeing guys recruited to actually play a position they have excelled at before. In my opinion, Jordan Poyer could have been a better QB or RB - but they put him on Defense, while we hung with Immobile Mannion. Seems like Riley went after a QB And some small RB's, but after that it was 'where can we use this guy, or, he's a project- but we can coach him up' I prefer the Andersen approach and it appears we are getting guys that are getting a number of Poly's and I have NEVER seen a 'soft' Poly. Also, getting some RB's with some size and speed. The star system is what it is, so we are ALL going to continue to see surprises in both directions. Personally, I like the guys that aren't afraid of a challenge and those with huge motors for an entire game. This as opposed to the guys that are just looking for the headlines. Anyone that begs to be recruited by a specific school has, in my opinion, ego issues combined with a hey look at me attitude. Go Beavs!

Where are these high averages for Riley coming from? I have from Rivals (i don't pay for it so on the free part when I look at past years for commits)
2015 2.34 2014 2.67
Hard to always just chalk it up to a star average always seems like quite a range in three stars. Position rank, state rank, etc.

Last year doesn't really count against either coach, Andersen didn't have time and some of Riley's top recruits decommitted when he left. 2013 was one of Riley's weaker years star average-wise. It will be interesting to see how OSU's recruiting ranks in upcoming years. Riley had a number of seasons of 8th to 10th in the league, let's see if Andersen does better.

Position rank, state rank, etc. Riley/OSU never ranked high in recruiting. Riley hit the 30s a couple times in how many years??? Riley classes usually hung out in the 50s. That's Riley. So, I'm fine if CGA can consistently hit a top 40 class. The rest is up to his coaching. I want to see if Oregon State can recruit with Nebraska, Wisconsin, VA Tech, TTech, Wazzu type of teams......Get a top 40 class. At worst, a top 50 class. 50 something classes sucks. Keep the flyers and in-state flyers to a minimal number and have most recruits be 3 stars. Of course, it's not all stars in measuring. It's who are the other schools offering the recruit. Levitre was a 2 star(?) but the only other school offering was LSU? I forget if this was the case. CGA better kill it on the recruiting trail. He's doing OK. I want to see who signs on LOI day..........and who actually qualifies.

One week later:
OSU: Rivals: 31 (7th in Pac12) Scout: 50 (10th in Pac12) 24/7: 39 (8th in Pac12)
Not surprising considering we didn't pick up anyone during the week, but with some of the classes behind ours having significantly more slots available to fill, I fear we may be trending backwards until February.

So you're saying this probably isn't a good sign:

So you're saying this probably isn't a good sign: I dunno. He's 5'11" and 208 lbs. But, whatever works, I guess! He's gonna have put on 20 lbs. Things look decent, I think. We'll see how the class shapes up in a couple of months. Aren't they close to the max if the commits were to sign?

That's kind of what I'm worried about...that this class looks good because we got quite a few early commitments. Other schools, with more spots left to fill, are going to pass us by after we hit our limit. Some kids will be greyshirts, I saw something about some of the JC guys counting against last year's number. I'm not sure how all this recruiting stuff works, I've never really paid attention to it until this season.

A very tough road to hoe that's for sure. And one of the first steps is to see if he can recruit a class this year. Wait and see. LOI day. How many academic casualties (clearinghouse) and grey shirts? LBs and OLs? JC kids at various positions(even QB)? So, I have worries and hope. We shall see. I really, really believe he can regularly recruit a top forty class. If he's a good coach, he can work with that.

A top 40 class means nothing if the rest of our league is in the top 35. I'm waiting to see how it all turns out in February after LOI day. Riley consistently recruited groups that were ranked 8th to 10th in the Pac. I'm hoping GA can bump that up a bit.

I'm with the wait and see group on this recruiting issue... MR's classes pretty much mirror GA's, GA's even a little lower in comparison to his Conference(s)... and that was recruiting to MWC not to Pac12...
However, I'm even more of a wait and see... who signs is one thing... I want to see Fall 2016 and fall 2017 who in the first two classes ACTUALLY contributes!! Not sure how the recruiting #'s game got so big... you have to sign 'em, then they actually have to turn out! The NFL is full of small college guys and 2/3* HS recruits. You never can tell when a kid has peaked, or his just beginning to mature and will be a huge contributor.
Yep... large/talented recruiting classes help depth... we need that... but, I'll still wait and SEE. It's one of the biggest pieces of coaching that in all reality is complete chance/luck... work your tail off to recruit/sign/coach 'em... but, there is no guarantees (for many reasons) they'll ever significantly contribute...
