While trying to wait patiently for the game against UCLA this Friday, I've been thinking about next year's team. It looks like it has the potential to be very good, but the biggest question is "How can you replace Sydney Wiese?". The answer is "You can't!!"... but what's the best we can do? Her ability to handle the ball, step up and hit clutch shots (as we saw against Stanford) and her leadership stand out as what we'll miss most. Coach Rueck has often backed her up with Katie McWilliams, however it has been clear that Katie (at 6'2") has had some trouble with TO's versus small guards. The only other options seem to be 1) Taylor Kalmer, or 2) Moving Mikayla Pivec to the point. Taylor Kalmer seems to be a good passer and ball handler, however she isn't getting much playing time. I'm not sure if it is her defense or some of the TO's she's committed in her past minutes that has been keeping her out of the games. I'd really like to see her get a chance to develop further at the point. Pivec has been great, but I don't think she has shown anywhere near the ball handling skills of Sydney. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.

Here are my thoughts on the 2017-18 Oregon State Women's Basketball Team Starters, Backup Gulich, Marie (Sr) , Grymek, Joanna (Jr) Pivec, Mikayla (So), Tudor, Kat (So) McWilliams, Katie (Jr), Corosdale, Taya (Fr) Brown, Breanna (Sr), Washington, Maddie (So) Kalmer, Taylor (Jr), Goodman, Aleah (Fr) I think that what might actually happen is that Tudor will replace Kalmer in the above list of starters and that Rueck will actually try to have McWilliams take the place of Wiese. Likely a mistake based upon what we've been seeing. He should be getting Kalmer as much experience as possible at this point.

He seems to have pulled a whole lot of the right strings since the LaVonda days. We still have half a season this year and the start to next year to see how the players shake out and what should be done. I guess at this point I trust/walk with Coach Scott Rueck.

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts. If you recall, Syd had her own challenges with turnovers as a Fr and So PG. Has improved a lot this year and last year. I think Katie is potentially an even better athlete than Syd and playing every day against Syd, Gabby and Mik has to be sharpening her skills.
Katie Mac and Mikayla will be next years' version of 2015's Syd and Jamie.

Last year when Wiese went down with the injury. McWilliams did pretty good at point and the team performed well.

Last year when Wiese went down with the injury. McWilliams did pretty good at point and the team performed well. Except against UCLA, where we got blown out, primarily due to turnovers. Matching up against teams like that is my concern. Maybe Katie can improve like Syd did...but I think it is a legitimate concern. Kalmer will be sorely needed and hopefully Goodman can develop into that role. Has anyone watched Goodman and, if so, does she have that potential?

Hate to be the wet blanket, but why think about next year when we are only 22% of the way done with the Pac 12 schedule? We've got a long way to go before next year hits. We should just enjoy the ride for this year, no matter how next year turns out.

I really don't see the problem in that and find it very odd that you do!

Taylor missed the first 4 games of the season due to some sort of hand issue - it was taped/bandaged early, and I still notice that she has two fingers of one hand taped together..... That said, I was happy when she went off for 15 against BYU (not one of our directional school level of competition in the pre-season). I wonder if the injury is lingering or she has just not broken into the rotation with the emergence of Pivec. Go Beavs!

Kalmer will be sorely needed and hopefully Goodman can develop into that role. Has anyone watched Goodman and, if so, does she have that potential? I have not seen a second of Aleah's game, but some on this board have opined that she is a better guard than Evina Westbrook..... What gives me great hope regarding her game is what Kelly Sopak, her AAU coach, had to say about her: “I think OSU got the steal of the 2017 class in Aleah Goodman,” Kelly Sopak, her Cal Stars EYBL club team coach, said. “She is an elite level lead guard and will fit right into coach Rueck's system.” (https://prospectsnation.com/story/goodman-picks-beavers) Sopak would of course praise his player, but this is the guy that has coached the Sabrina Ionescus of the world, so he knows something about evaluating guard talent. What I really hope is that Goodman is jitterbug-quick. Our tall, lanky guards have always had trouble with those super-quick guards several of the upper-echelon Pac-12 teams have.......I was really hoping we would land Kiana Williams (of that jitterbug mold) but she went Stanford. So either I hope SR can land someone from the juco ranks, some unsigned "diamond in the rough" or a foreign player during Spring signing period (though he seems very deliberate in his recruiting and he might be done for the year). And jitterbug quick guards are not a dime a dozen...... Go Beavs!

I really don't see the problem in that and find it very odd that you do! I think the pieces are in place for a very special team to emerge in the 2017-2018 season, and perhaps the one after that. Not saying we aren't on an amazing trajectory this year, but if we can (likely "by committee") minimize the impact of Syd's departure, we pick up a 6'8" #1 juco center with very Hamblin-esque characteristics, we have top-100 talent at about every position, and we have a world class coach at the helm. Plus we add reinforcements in the form of someone rated about where Pivec was at forward (Corosdale) and guard (Goodman). Of course, losing Gabby and Kolbie might be a lot to overcome despite that...... But I am with beavsteve - last year, this year and the coming 2-3 seasons have been and are very, very exciting to contemplate!!! Go Beavs!
