Attendance, or more specifically game-day revenue, is generally a factor in determining the success of a coach. Despite the drop-off in success on the court, the fans still seem to be hanging in there.
Non-conference attendance was only down slightly from last year, and it was still much better than CR's last year.
This year's non-conference games (7) averaged 4,331 versus 4,682 in six games last year. The numbers are up from WT's first year (4,064 in 8 games) and CR's last (3,310 in 7 games).
The Portland tournament was down slightly this year, 14,585 for two games, versus 16,587 last year (12% drop).
The first two conference games are of some concern. Only 5,088 average for two games. That is the lowest attendance for a Pac 10 series since CR's time - and it came against two ranked opponents. At this pace, it would drop our Pac 12 home game attendance by 25% over WT's first two season (about 1,750 per game or 16,000 for season), and keep us slightly ahead (7%) of CR's last year.
Pac 12 Home Game Attendance (9 games):
CR's last year: 42,555 (4,727 per game)
WT's first year: 62,891 (6,987)
WT's second year: 61,672 (6,852)
WT's third year through two games: 10,176 (5,088)
It will be interesting to see how fans respond during the rest of the season. If the new AD is looking for a reason to get "his guy" (whoever that is) into the HC spot, this could be played up as a big factor.
