I could type up an essay dissecting how bad we truly are, and have been, but I'll keep it brief as a favor.
In the half court we run little to no sets, our motion offense is horrible - no one cuts to the rim, filler screens off ball, and what usually ends up happening is as the shot clock winds down we set a desperate on ball screen which results in some sort of ugly forced shot/turnover. Either WT has no concept of half-court motion, or the kids aren't listening - either way that's the coaches fault. When teams zone us it's even worse. No zone sets, stagnant perimeter players, short corner/high post have no synergy. The ball rarely gets to the middle and we usually end up taking a poor outside shot (which the defense wants), or we force someting to the middle...once again, either WT has no concept on how to beat a zone or the kids aren't listening - either way that's the coaches fault.
Team defense is very bad everywhere.. from fundamentals, awareness, rotations, etc. No one closes out, no one pressures the ball, no one traces the ball, no one jumps to the ball, no one boxes out, we give up easy penetration, we don't rebound well, I could go on and on. I encourage everyone to pay attention to small things next time we play - who is talking defensively? is anyone pressuring the ball? up the line? are players quick to help? The answer is usually no.
These have been tendencies and bad habits that WT has allowed for three years now. The only difference about last season is that WT had one of the most gifted players in the country, GPII, who continuously bailed us out in the half-court with his athleticism, aggressiveness, and length - on BOTH sides of the floor. Also missing, are two very underrated/under-appreciated ex-Beavers - Malcolm Duvivier and LMW. Neither of those two were great basketball players, but their effort and toughness is something that is clearly missing this season, especially defensively.
