Punters are people too. deadspin.com/johnny-hekker-is-the-punter-every-punter-wants-to-be-1789931094And this fantastic line from the article: In Week 10, the Rams and Jets spent three hours farting into their hands until Hekker, with the line of scrimmage at his own 17, did this. That’s a 78-yard punt, entirely through the air, in case you were wondering: Instead of decent field position, the Jets took over at their own 15. They promptly went three-and-out, and instead it was the Rams who got the ball at midfield. Within minutes, L.A. kicked a field goal that proved to be the final margin in a 9-6 win.

That was a great read.
I had forgotten all about the Beavs having Ryan Allen at one point too.

amazing since the guy did negative punts at OSU. Happy to call him a Beaver! I too remember a negative punt from Hekker (I want to say at Ped State or some other prominent non-conf game), but he couldn't have been *that* bad - he owns the second best punting season in school history (2011 - 50 punts, 44.0 yard average) and 4th best punting career in Beaver history - with more punt attempts than anyone not named Tim Kollas, who holds the Pac-12 record. He also had the second longest punt in school history (72 yards), with the longest punt dating from the 1930s. I would think in the futility of the 80s and 90s we would have attracted the world's best punters, so that is saying something. That said, it does feel to me like Hekker really found his way when he hit the NFL, but that might be that negative punt memory looming large.... Go Beavs!

They say the best way to get good at something is practice, practice, practice.
He certainly is getting the opportunity to punt a lot for a crap team like the Rams.

Hekker's biggest issue when he was with the Beavs was consistency. He always had the ability to really launch a beauty, but also a tendency to shank them here and there. As fans, we always remember the F-ups more than the great, or above-average stuff. The NFL is always looking for guys who have high ceilings, and Hekker - if he could eliminate his inconsistency - always had a high ceiling.
