From the press conference:
He said that everyone "will attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind."
Though he understands the importance of improving the Ducks' defense, starting with finding an excellent defensive coordinator, Taggart said he has no preconceived notions about a defensive style. He just wants to be able to stop opposing teams from scoring touchdowns, he said.
Taggart said to expect the Ducks to continue to run an uptempo, spread offense.
"It will be fast. It will be tough. It will be exciting, I'm sure," he said of the Ducks offense.
Taggart said his football team would compete every week, and he also talked about his players as students. "We will excel with our efforts in the classroom and graduate our players." He added: "We will build young men of character, exceptional character."
So there you have it: Stop them from scoring. Uptempo. Be tough. Build character.
Now to be fair, this is basically what every coach everywhere at every introductory presser says.. including our guy. But it's fun to see in print. Oh... THAT'S THE KEY. Stop those pesky touchdowns. If 110% ain't enough, let's go 111%! Sounds like you've solved the riddle Willy.

OK - I don't follow football on the other side of the country. I don't even much follow other Pac-12 schools, except to educate myself on them when we play them.
That said, looking at Taggert, while he obviously says all the right things (very few coaches in their intro presser don't), I just wonder:
Is he an 11.5 million dollar plus upgrade on a coach that is 1 season removed from giving the 'ucks a shot at the "natty"? Coaches are now getting shown the door from the school down the street for averaging like a 9-3 record?
I would say that their expectations may not be in line with reality. But as they say, "a fool and his money is soon parted" - I guess their fool/Phil has plenty of money to part with......
Will be interesting to watch the path of the "upgrade".
Go Beavs!

I see huge similarities between the football hire and the Horton hire ... 1) Not the schools first choice , many thanks, but no thanks. 2) Comes in blowing his mouth about owning Oregon 3) Going after OSU leans 4) Lastly, failing year after year to the point where it is just a last thought shell of a program ( Football would have him fired by now - HORTON is only a keeper cause uo does not care about baseball anymore. I believe the same thing will happen to Willie Laggard in 24 months. I hope he got a deal like Helfrich !

I don't really see any similarities between the ucks hiring Taggart as their head football coach vs them hiring George Horton a few years back as head baseball coach. Just looking at the list you made... you said neither were the schools first choice. Like most athletic departments, oregon doesn't release a list of their top choices when searching for a head coach. I happen to work there tho... (for Nike, not the ucks. I also do a fair amount of stuff for the Beavs)... so I actually do get to hear what's going on during their head coaching searches. As far as the ucks search for a head baseball coach to revive a program that had literally been dead for decades... George Horton WAS their first choice. Horton was considered one of the best baseball coaches in the nation at the time. Oregon did contact a couple other baseball coaches as well... but Horton was their top choice all along. As for their search for a head football coach... no, Taggart wasn't at the top of the list. But he wasn't far from it. Mullens is an idiot and doesn't know the first thing about being an athletic director... he's a numbers guy who knows how to run a business, and was basically hired initially to be a yes man for uncle Phil and Nike... so he hired the search firm to compile a list of people who they consider to be the best up-and-coming coaches in college football. Taggart was one of the top names on that list. Oregon wanted to make a splash and hire a really big name... they talked to everyone. The rumors about Phil Knight offering to pay $10million per year for the right coach were basically true. He didn't say $10 million... he said whatever it takes. But only for a REALLY big name. They talked to all of them... but just got a bunch of noes. I was actually really surprised at just how little interest they all had... even considering their salary would be increased by between 150% to nearly 300% depending on the coach. After the big names had turned em down, it was on to the search firms list. Taggart was number 2 or 3 out of a total of 12.

Eugene, Oregon is not for everyone. Kinda humorous how the folks down there are so stunned when anyone regards their town as something other than the end of the rainbow.
