This seemed like an interesting article, but then it claimed that Florida has a referee bias vs. Alabama this weekend and I spit Pepsi all over my screen.

The crux of the article seems to be that better teams get more calls. I'd say this is generally true, because better teams have better players that need to be held, interfered with, etc. in order for worse teams with worse players to remain within striking distance during a game. If a team has a 5* monster DE coming off the edge, my expectation would be that the worse team's LT would hold the crap out of him to keep his QB from getting Garretsoned a la Minnesota. Better teams commit less penalties seems like a "duh" statement to me.

Very interesting article - thanks for posting! I would love to have better appearances of impartial ref-ing, since those "erratic" refs from the Pac-12 are what we have to deal with week in and week out during the season. Or apply more automated/AI/image analysis to the process.
That said, I also ended up wondering if the "protected flagships" - teams more likely to win championships or with higher standings in the conference were less flagged for penalties because they were better coached (and hence winning and doing better in their conference) and thus less likely to commit infractions?
There are a lot of variables to any sort of statistical analysis like this, and had I more time, I would love to understand better the process this study used to account for those variables......
Thanks again for posting! Go Beavs!
