This AIN'T Big 12 football, brother! One of the funnier rants that I've seen!

OSU dodged a bullet there. I recall there was some serious interest in hiring Hawkins back when Erickson departed and we ultimately hired Riley2.
I also seem to recall that he (or his agent) proposed some contract demands that OSU wasn't prepared to run with.
Wonder if he made any contract demands to Davis?

There was at least one Beaver fan who was irate that we hired Riley2 rather than "guaranteed 10-game winner Dan Hawkins". I was so relieved we hadn't hired Hawkins because I sensed that much of his so-called intensity and toughness was for the benefit of the cameras and the media. If you listen to his famous "this ain't intramurals, brother!" rant, you'll notice that he calmly introduces it and then goes on the obviously practiced rant. I never had a problem with Riley's attitude and demeanor because it was genuine. I don't have a problem with Andersen's attitude and demeanor because I believe it is genuine. I had a problem with Hawkins' attitude and demeanor because I felt they were fake. Hawkins started his career as Colorado head coach with 6 straight losses. Every week I would make a post on Pure Orange about how "guaranteed 10-game winner Dan Hawkins" had...hmmmm....lost again. I thought I was being witty and entertaining and making a point. Finally a friend on the message board, whose opinion I respected, told me that my posts were not enjoyable, were not helping anyone, and really didn't need to be made. So, I stopped doing it. I wish that somebody could do the same for the posters on here who think they are being witty and entertaining or making a point by continuing to brag/rag on Mike Riley's successes/failures as head coach at Nebraska.

There should be a master list somewhere, enshrined with all the names that Beaver fans wanted hired over Riley. Dan Hawkins - fired from CU Pat Hill - fired from Fresneck Tim DeRuyter - fired from Fresneck I'm sure there's more but those are the Big Three in my book.

I remember Chris Tormey's name coming up at various times as a potential OSU HC, but I don't recall if that was when Riley I left, or when Erickson left. Could have been another time altogether, but I do remember his name being bandied about.

People love being right and hate being wrong. if a person was on the wrong side of a prediction, they are going to not want to hear it. If there is a chance, even a slim one, of being proven right, they are going to take it. people are weird man. In the general sense, I have no problem talking about Riley. He was the coach here for a long, long time. did some good things, did some bad things, but ultimately has a lot of history to draw from. But. I did think the thread after the Civil war was flat ridiculous though. Time, place and context man. It all matters.

Oh man, that was the worst idea ever. I don't think that was a bullet we dodged because I don't think it ever got out of the gun. Thankfully.

I probably shouldn't have said anything about it since I was basing my "worst idea ever" on my impressions of him from afar. I never met him in person. My impression when he was here under DE was that he was not exactly ready to be a HC. Looking at his resume on wikipedia I see that his first chance to be a HC was last week when he took over as the interim HC at Georgia State. They did win the game, as 3-point underdogs. I think they are 7-point underdogs to Idaho this weekend, so we'll see how they do. As I said, I probably shouldn't have been so negative about it since I really don't know much about him.

Not at all. It's funny, and I'm surprised that I remembered his name. It's a good thing I think to look back with clear vision of things that might have happened but didn't. I had no idea where he was or if he was still coaching. He preached "keep it rolling" and was pretty convincing to me. Tough job figuring out which coordinator etc will be the next great head coach. Look at Chip Smelly. Mired in obscurity for like 14 yrs at New Hampshire. New Hampshire! That hotbed of football!

I'm pretty sure that the AD called Dennis Erickson to get a recommendation about Lappano and Dennis said "what about me?"
