Great! But, let's wait until LOI day in Feb. .............and let's hope he makes it through the clearinghouse.............and let's hope he's not Mormon wanting to immediately go on a Mission.
Great pickup, though!

We need to wait until LOI, but if he's planning on enrolling in January I doubt he has any academic issues, and clearly won't be going on a mission.
This is the third 4* recruit GA has pulled in so far. Shurod Thompson didn't work out, but he still committed.
Which reminds me, is Christian Wallace practicing? He is obviously redshirting, but I wasn't sure if he was cleared by the cartel members at NCAA. For that matter, any word on Isaac Garcia?

This is fantastic on paper... but Riley also got a lot of star recruits that never made campus. Signed, sealed and delivered, and I will be a happy camper. Until then, I am just hopeful.

"The 6-foot-3, 187-pound pass-catcher, out of Berean Christian High School (Walnut Creek, California), also held offers from Boise State, Colorado, Michigan, Purdue, Utah, Washington, Washington State, Wisconsin and others. 'I picked Oregon State, because I was comfortable there on my visit," he said. "It just feels like home. I know a lot of the players and coaches, and I feel like I can make an immediate impact going there – enroll in January, go into spring ball and start working hard and going my part, playing as a true freshman. I feel like I fit their offense well. They've got some good quarterbacks coming in. I love everything about it.' As Atown has stated above, we've seen this before going back to Riley. Kuli.......Ioane?...A QB back in 2002 or 2003? Forget name.
Don't want to get all excited until the recruit signs, clears academically, and is on campus.
Don't know with CGA's 4 stars.....was Isaac Garcia a 3 or a 4? No matter. We need him. Thompson is a goner. Dunno about Garcia and Wallace. Are they finally all copacetic academically with the clearinghouse? Red-shirts I hear?
Question: shouldn't the coaching staff exercise some academic due diligence to prospective recruits' grades/transcripts? I'm sure Wisconsin had CGA do that. Or, is OSU/CGA so desperate for recruits that "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it?"

Or, is OSU/CGA so desperate for recruits that "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it?" Thompson is gone and has confirmed that OSU coaches aren't in touch at this time. I believe he's at Diablo Valley JC, but not playing. Wallace is on campus, enrolled in school, but not cleared to practice or play. #NCAABlackBox Garcia was admitted to school but later found to be ineligible(?), he returned home to Bellevue to complete the class (or two) that were needed and is expected to enroll back at OSU winter term. This was per the Tribune about 3-4 weeks ago. I get tempering expectations w/Hodgins until he's here, we've seen it plenty of times. One difference though is that I think schools knew early on that the 3 guys from last year did present a risk academically. There's a reason why Cal backed off on Shurod Thompson and he suddenly became a Beav verbal. I'm guessing same thing w/Garcia and USC. With Hodgins, schools have been after him all along. Probably a good sign.

Over the last 10 years we averaged about 3-4 non-qualifiers per class and this is about average for all schools except a few that can be really selective and still obtain high quality recruits. We are not in a unique situation here. Hodgins is not a red flag recruit. The risk in his commitment is less than at least 15 of the other commits that we currently have (the risk is extremely low with the others, by the way). I know where the angst comes from but it does not need to temper logical enthusiasm in a situation. I see it similar to saying that I refuse to look forward to a Beaver win until the game is over. There is something to be said about enjoying the process of winning and yes even losing (to a degree). The whole recruiting process is about winning and losing in each battle.
I do not completely understand the current pessimism with Garcia and Wallace. Right now they have the look of being more like a Villamin recruit who was a partial qualifier and after a redshirt year spent qualifying completely he has produced pretty well over the past 3 years. With the quality that these 2 bring I would be really happy if this was the end result. The biggest detriment to taking flyers on academically risky recruits is the danger it contributes to the inability to fill the 85 scholarship spots causing depth issues. Medical retirements and transfers affect depth more than taking a risk on a handful of academically challenged recruits. Medical retirements are unpredictable and transfers are about the ability of the staff to retain recruits for 4 years. Yes, I know I did not cover all the variables, but I think this is sufficient.
Just some of my thoughts.

Just some of my thoughts. Well said.. The fact that Wallace is actually here and in school is night and day different from the Simi Kuli's of the world. Which by the way, his recruitment was nearly a mirror image of Shurod Thompson - ton of offers, early official visits to some big schools: LSU, Oklahoma, Nebraska. Decommitted from Nebraska, some of those other earlier offers "vanished" and in the end, picked us over Kansas State. The LSU's and Oklahoma's of the world can afford to move on from a 4-5 star kid once things don't look promising. We stay on them, hope they can qualify by the next fall. Sometimes it works, sometimes they don't ever qualify and end up at West Texas A&M. So it goes.. So again, big difference between a kid who plans to get here in January vs guys where we are crossing our fingers and hoping they actually set foot on campus.

Wallace is on campus, enrolled in school, but not cleared to practice or play. #NCAABlackBox Wallace has been practicing since september, or at least was... Did he get.... Uncleared??? Here is the thread where Wallace starting practice was discussed (http://bennyshouse.com/thread/2326/proof-life) including pics of his jersey in his locker...

I dont have too much heart-ache on non-qualifiers. Sometimes it works out for us. I'm going back to about 1996, but Roddy Tompkins was a four-star WR out of Victoria, Texas. He had offers from Texas, A&M, LSU, and others but they went away because he appeared unlikely to qualify. OSU took a chance on him and he did. He was our best receiver of the Pettibone era (only as a true) and caught a ton of passes the next three years under Riley I and Erickson.
