getting players who are obsessed with football instead of being obsessed with being stud football players.
There's a difference and i thing GA knows it
For all the talk about recruiting rankings, the only thing that seems certain is the same top 7 or 8 teams fight over the five stars AND usually end up playing in the big bowls. Everybody else can sink or swim irregardless of how many stars they sign. And it is guaranteed each conference has teams that will flip the script and sign a list that pays off in big bowls and also debunks the recruiting services by sending more players to the NFL who didnt even show on their lists.
So how does that happen? my theory is the overachievers have one trait in common, they simply have a higher "care factor", which is a term GA uses often. Football requires a nutso factor to play well. You simply have to want it more than your talent level supports. The players who are told they aren't x enough to play higher level and continue to play, either by walking on or by getting a last minute scholly at a school that has an opening have that chip on their shoulder. They dont have the usual problem of being the best player in their league and suddenly their egos get smashed at the college level.
Not to say Gary is recruiting scrubs. He is being selective about the personality types he wants on the team. He isnt looking for quick infusions of talent if there is questionable desire. I think he is staring down a couple of losing seasons this year and possibly next to carefully build a roster for the long term that is filled with focused gym rats and film study wonks, weight room maniacs. Riley supporters can say Riley captured this too but the win loss record shows this was lost a few years ago at least. GA found the roster filled with dispassionate, checked-out players who were not disciplined under Riley because lets face it Riley was not a discliplinarian.
I'm well past the honeymoon phase with GA. I don't like some of the on field and personnel decisions ive seen so far. But as far as recruiting goes, I'm watching and i see some very interesting prospects lined up. Lots of "Care Factor" players on the radar.
